Woods: Garcia comment hurtful, time to move on

VIRGINIA WATER, England (AP) ? Sergio Garcia apologized to Tiger Woods for saying he would have "fried chicken" at dinner with his rival, a comment that Woods described as hurtful and inappropriate.

"I want to send an unreserved apology. I did not want to offend anyone," Garcia said Wednesday. "My answer was totally stupid and out of place."

Garcia was at a European Tour awards dinner Tuesday night when he was jokingly asked if he would have Woods over for dinner during the U.S. Open. The two players had been verbally sparring since The Players Championship nearly two weeks ago.

"We'll have him round every night," Garcia replied. "We will serve fried chicken."

The remark took the golfers' differences into ugly territory, reminiscent of when Fuzzy Zoeller made a similar comment about Woods after he won the 1997 Masters, becoming the first player of black heritage to win a major.

"The comment that was made wasn't silly. It was wrong, hurtful and clearly inappropriate," Woods said in a series of tweets. "I'm confident that there is real regret the remark was made. The Players ended nearly two weeks ago and it's long past time to move and talk about golf."

For once, both players agreed.

Garcia held an impromptu news conference at the BMW PGA Championship to elaborate on a statement he sent out Tuesday night through the European Tour.

"I want to also apologize to my Ryder Cup teammates who were there last night for taking the shine away from a wonderful event, and finally and foremost, I want to apologize to Tiger and to anyone I could have offended. I felt very sick about it and feel really bad, and just hope to settle things down and move on."

Garcia said he called Mark Steinberg, Woods' agent at Excel Sports, because he doesn't have a phone number for the world's No. 1 player.

The Spaniard said his comment about fried chicken was not intended as a racist remark and that he was caught off guard by the question from Golf Channel's Steve Sands.

"It was a funny question and I wanted it to be a funny answer in reply," he said. "I started to get a sick feeling straight after the dinner and I felt so bad I thought my heart was going to come out of my body. I felt bad about it all day."

Woods was on his way to a record win in the 1997 Masters when Zoeller was talking about his performance and ended by saying, "So you know what you guys do when he gets in here? Pat him on the back, say congratulations, enjoy it and tell him not to serve fried chicken next year. Or collard greens, or whatever the hell they serve."

The remark followed Zoeller for the rest of his career, and it cost him major endorsements.

Garcia's main sponsor is TaylorMade-adidas, which issued a statement Wednesday that his comment "was offensive and in no way aligns with TaylorMade-adidas Golf's values and corporate culture.

"We have spoken with Sergio directly and he clearly has regret for his statement and we believe he is sincere," the statement said. "We discussed with Sergio that his comments are clearly out of bounds and we are continuing to review the matter."

PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem and European Tour chief executive George O'Grady were at the awards dinner Tuesday night.

O'Grady said in a statement that he and Finchem spoke to Garcia after his pro-am round at Wentworth.

"Sergio expressed very deep and sincere regret for his unguarded and, in his own words, 'stupid' remark and we are also aware of his statement of apology," O'Grady said. "Following our meeting, we have accepted his full apology and we consider the matter closed."

PGA Tour spokesman Ty Votaw said the tour would not be commenting on the public feud between two marquee players.

Garcia said he hoped this might lead to an improved relationship with Woods.

"Like I said before, I am terribly sorry for what happened and I am sure we can talk soon and I can apologize to him face-to-face, and move forward and forget about the whole thing," he said.

It's the second time in two years that Woods has been the center of a racially sensitive remark. At an awards night for caddies in Shanghai in November 2011, his former caddie received an award for best TV interview. Steve Williams, who had been fired by Woods in the summer of 2011, was on the bag for Adam Scott when he won at Firestone. Williams said in a CBS interview that it was "the best win of my life."

When he received the mock award, Williams said of the interview, "It was my aim to shove it right up that black a------."

He apologized to Woods the next week at the Australian Open.

Woods didn't surface for weeks after the Zoeller remarks. His absence allowed the incident to mushroom into a major story. With Garcia, he responded the next day on Twitter. They most likely won't see each other until the U.S. Open at Merion in three weeks outside Philadelphia.

"They're big names that certainly are attractive to our fans, the demographic that certainly watches the game," Zach Johnson said from the Colonial. "Maybe they add a little bit of drama here and there, and there's nothing wrong with that. I prefer that the drama and entertainment comes on the golf course, in any given week with anybody.

"Part of the reason their names have surfaced and will surface in the future is because they're really good," he said. "I hope that continues because they're great for the game."

More arrests after grisly U.K. terror attack

By Guy Faulconbridge and Michael Holden

LONDON (Reuters) - Police investigating the murder of a soldier hacked to death on a busy London street were looking on Friday into whether the two suspected killers, British men of Nigerian descent, were part of a wider conspiracy.

The two suspects, aged 22 and 28, are under guard in hospitals after being shot and arrested by police following the murder of 25-year-old Afghan war veteran Lee Rigby on Wednesday in broad daylight. They have not yet been charged.

Detectives were also questioning another man and a woman, arrested on Thursday on suspicion of conspiracy to murder, as they tried to determine whether those responsible had links to militants in Britain or overseas.

"This is a large, complex and fast-moving investigation which continues to develop," police said in a statement.

"Many lines of inquiry are being followed by detectives, and the investigation is progressing well."

One of the assailants, filmed justifying the killing as he stood near the body holding a knife and meat cleaver in bloodied hands, was named by acquaintances as 28-year-old Londoner Michael Adebolajo, a British-born convert to Islam.

Little is known so far about the other man.

The murder, just a month after the Boston Marathon bombing and the first Islamist killing in Britain since local suicide bombers killed 52 people in London in 2005, revived fears of "lone wolves" who may have had no direct contact with al Qaeda.

Police chiefs said they would have 1,200 extra officers on the streets in London overnight and at key locations such as religious venues and transport hubs.

"It will be assessed on a rolling basis depending on the picture. I'm sure there will be heightened numbers for a little while to come," a spokesman said.

A source close to the investigation told Reuters the attackers were known to Britain's MI5 internal security service, raising questions about whether it could have been prevented. Adebolajo had handed out radical Islamist pamphlets, but neither was considered a serious threat, a government source said.

Another source close to the inquiry said the local backgrounds of the suspects in a multicultural metropolis - nearly 40 percent of Londoners were born abroad - and the simplicity of the attack made prevention difficult.

"Apart from being horribly barbaric, this was relatively straightforward to carry out," the source said. "This was quite low-tech, and that is frankly pretty challenging."

Anjem Choudary, one of Britain's most recognized Islamist leaders, told Reuters Adebolajo was known to fellow Muslims as Mujahid - a name meaning 'fighter': "He used to attend a few demonstrations and activities that we used to have in the past."

He added that he had not seen him for about two years: "He was peaceful, unassuming, and I don't think there's any reason to think he would do anything violent."

POLICE LOOKING FOR LINKS

The two men used a car to run down Drummer Rigby outside Woolwich Barracks in southeast London and then attacked him with a meat cleaver and knives, witnesses said.

Police officers speak with the driver of a car displaying a banner reading, "We R British! Stand Together Stand Strong", outside an army barracks near the scene of a killing in Woolwich, southeast London May 23, 2013. British authorities believe that two men accused of hacking a soldier to death on a London street in revenge for wars in Muslim countries are British of Nigerian descent, a source close to the investigation said Thursday. REUTERS/Luke MacGregor (BRITAIN - Tags: CRIME LAW MILITARY POLITICS) less? The pair told shocked bystanders they acted in revenge for British wars in Muslim countries.

"We swear by almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you. The only reason we have done this is because Muslims are dying every day," Adebolajo was filmed saying by an onlooker. "This British soldier is an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth."

Rigby, who had a two-year-old son, was not in uniform. The bandsman was working locally as an army recruiter.

"All he wanted to do from when he was a little boy was to be in the army," his family said in a statement. "He wanted to live life and enjoy himself."

In Nigeria, with a mixed Christian-Muslim population and where the authorities are battling an Islamist insurgency, a government source said there was no evidence the Woolwich suspects were linked to groups in west Africa.

British investigators are looking at information that at least one of the suspects may have had an interest in joining Somalia-based Islamist rebel group al Shabaab, which is allied to al Qaeda, a source with knowledge of the matter said.

Al Shabaab linked the attack to the Boston bombing and last year's gun attacks in the southern French city of Toulouse.

"Toulouse, Boston, Woolwich ... Where next? You just have to grin and bear it, it's inevitable. A case of the chickens coming home to roost!" the rebels said on Twitter.

Peter Clarke, who led the investigation into the 2005 bombings, popularly known as 7/7, said that if the Woolwich attackers did turn out to be acting alone, it showed the difficulty the security services faced in trying to stop them.

"An attack like this doesn't need sophisticated fund raising and sophisticated communications or planning," he told Reuters. "It can be organized and then actually delivered in a moment."

Children of married parents less likely to be obese

May 22, 2013 ? Children living in households where the parents are married are less likely to be obese, according to new research from Rice University and the University of Houston.

"Childhood obesity is a significant public health issue in our country, with nearly one-third of all U.S. children ages 2-17 overweight or obese," said Rachel Kimbro, study co-author, associate professor of sociology at Rice and director of Rice's Kinder Institute Urban Health Program. "Despite this, very little research has been conducted to explore the impact of family structure on this epidemic."

In a recent edition of the Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk, research by Kimbro and colleagues shows that children living in a traditional two-parent married household are less likely to be obese (17 percent obesity rate) than children living with cohabitating parents, who have a 31 percent obesity rate. The obesity rate is even higher for children living with an adult relative (29 percent), single mother (23 percent) and cohabitating stepparent family (23 percent). The study did not evaluate children of same-sex couples, due to lack of available data. The higher rates for nontraditional parent families were observed even after the researchers accounted for factors associated with childhood obesity, including diet, physical activity and socio-economic status.

The exception to this finding was children living with single fathers or in married stepparent households, who had an obesity rate of 15 percent.

"Previous research has shown that single-father households tend to have more socio-economic resources than single-mother households," Kimbro said. "And since socio-economic status is the single greatest predictor of health, it serves to explain why children in single-father households may be less likely to be obese."

The study, "Family Structure and Obesity Among U.S. Children," examined the obesity rates of children living in traditional and nontraditional family structures in the U.S. The research sample of 10,400 children comes from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Birth Cohort, a nationally representative study of U.S. children and their families designed to provide information on children's development.

Data collection for the study began in 2001. The primary caregivers of the children participated in the first wave of the in-home interviews when their children were approximately 9 months old. Data was subsequently collected when the children were 2 years old, in preschool (approximately age 4) and in kindergarten. The sample included children from diverse socio-economic, racial and ethnic backgrounds as well as an oversample of Asian, Pacific Islander, Alaska Native, American Indian, twins and low-birth-weight children. Forty-six percent of the children were racial or ethnic minorities, 25 percent were poor and 16 percent of the children had mothers without high school diplomas.

The interviews included assessments of the children's height, weight and other measures of development, such as cognitive functioning. The children were organized in eight mutually exclusive categories designed to account for the children's current family structure and the one they were born into.

The authors hope their research will inspire future studies of nontraditional family structures and their impact on health and weight.

"For reasons we cannot fully measure, there appears to be something about people who marry and have a child that is fundamentally different than the other groups, and these factors are also linked to children's weight," Kimbro said.

"Our hope is that this research will encourage further exploration of this topic," said Kimbro's co-author, Jennifer Augustine. "There is substantial research on how family structure matters to other domains of children's development, yet little research on why marriage and other family structure types might matter for children's obesity."

Kimbro and Augustine have already begun to lead this charge with a new project that examines the household-level processes associated with different family structures that may explain differences in young children's risk of obesity.

The research was funded by Rice University and the University of Houston.

Labor board nominees advance

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A Senate panel has endorsed President Barack Obama's slate of five nominees to sit on the National Labor Relations Board. Two of them advanced despite strong GOP opposition.

The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee voted to send the nominees ? three Democrats and two Republicans ? to the full Senate.

Most Republicans senators on the panel voted against two of the Democratic nominees because they are currently sitting on the board as recess appointments. A federal appeals court has ruled that their appointments were unconstitutional, and GOP lawmakers say they should have stepped down.

The White House has appealed the court's decision and insists that all five nominees be approved as a group. But they are likely to need 60 votes to overcome GOP opposition.

Markets solid despite Fed policy speculation

LONDON (AP) ? Stock markets remained relatively solid Monday as evidence of a steady economic recovery in the U.S. continued to shore up sentiment.

Following another week, which saw many stock indexes around the world either hit record highs or multiyear peaks, investors have so far refrained from widespread profit-taking.

However, some analysts are beginning to wonder when a reverse will take place. That could be triggered if officials at the U.S. Federal Reserve start pondering an early end to the central bank's super-easy monetary policy after a run of strong U.S. economic data, particularly with regard to housing and jobs. The money generated by the Fed over the past few years in an attempt to keep the U.S. economy on an even keel has been one of the reasons why financial assets, such as stocks, have enjoyed strong gains despite a patchy global recovery.

In that context, investors will be particularly interested to hear what Fed chairman Ben Bernanke says when he addresses lawmakers on Wednesday.

"With many of the main indices looking dangerously overbought we are probably overdue a correction," said Mike McCudden, head of derivatives at Interactive Investor.

"All eyes will be on the Congressional testimony on Wednesday for confirmation that the Fed will start to scale back the bond purchasing program later in the year," he added.

Any concerns over a change in policy did not have any market impact Monday.

In Europe, the FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was flat at 6,725 but around 13-year highs. Germany's DAX, which has set a series of all-time highs, rose 0.5 percent to 8,441. The CAC-40 in France was 0.2 percent higher at 4,009.

Wall Street was poised for a fairly steady opening, with both Dow futures and the broader S&P 500 futures up 0.1 percent. The two indexes have also racked up a series of record highs.

In the currency markets, the dollar was slightly soft as traders booked some recent gains, with the euro up 0.4 percent at $1.2862. Against the yen, it was 0.6 percent lower at 102.55.

Earlier in Asia, stock markets had a strong start to the week. Japan's Nikkei 225 index jumped 1.5 percent to 15,360.81 while Hong Kong's Hang Seng surged 1.8 percent to 23,493.03. Benchmarks in mainland China also rose but South Korea's Kospi fell 0.2 percent to 1,982.43.

Oil prices were fairly subdued, with the benchmark New York rate down 65 cents at $95.37 a barrel.

Hi all, just joined. I've written a segment of code that writes the first and last name of employess like so:
last name, first name. To minimize the clutter in the main I want to get almost everything into a function so I've written this function that does string copies and string cats the last name and first name with a comma in the middle. However I received errors these are them:

arturo@arturo-Satellite-L305:~/Assign3c$ make g++ assign3c.cpp taxes.o Qsort.o -o main.exe assign3c.cpp: In function ?int main()?: assign3c.cpp:143:28: error: ?lastname? was not declared in this scope assign3c.cpp: In function ?void attachNames(char, char)?: assign3c.cpp:208:17: error: ?record? was not declared in this scope assign3c.cpp:208:24: error: ?i? was not declared in this scope assign3c.cpp:209:21: error: invalid conversion from ?char? to ?char*? [-fpermissive] /usr/include/string.h:136:14: error: initializing argument 1 of ?char* strcat(char*, const char*)? [-fpermissive] make: *** [main.exe] Error 1

 void attachNames(char S_name, char lastname); //prototype

 void attachNames(char S_name, char lastname);

 void attachNames(char S_name, char lastname) {   strcpy(S_name,record[i].lastname);   strcat(S_name, ",");   strcat(S_name, record[i].lastname); }

I have played around with the record and * and ampersands to see if something would work but nothing has. What am i doing wrong here?

You are only passing characters to your functions, you need to pass char pointers to your strings.

Okay so, and I promise to be better at this just given the chance...

 void attachNames(char *S_name, char * lastname);

 attachNames(&S_names, &lastname);

S_name is declared and lastname is in a struct...does that have any bearing?

 char S_name[12+10];

Oh no I got it to work! Thank you!

More police departments use psychological screening - Quad Cities ...

Psychological screenings for police candidates are becoming more common as law enforcement agencies stress a sound mind as well as a sound body.

The application process for police hopefuls includes physical fitness tests, written exams and internal interviews. But over the past decade, many departments have added psychological screenings as part of the vetting process.

"It's a special job," Silvis Police Chief Bill Brasche said. "This job is not simply throwing the bad guy in jail. It's a lot more than that."

Many police departments hire local psychologists or third-party companies to administer psychological screenings, which usually include personality diagnostic tests and one-on-one interviews.

"It's a job that can lead to vulnerability, to post-traumatic stress, to alcoholism, to aggressiveness," said Dr. Kirk Witherspoon, a Moline clinical and forensic psychologist, who interviews about 15 to 20 candidates a year for several area police departments.

The Silvis, Moline, Rock Island, East Moline, Aledo and Milan departments all require psych evaluations for potential candidates, but the Rock Island County Sheriff's Office does not.

"As far as I know, we've never done psychological evaluations," Sheriff Jeff Boyd said, adding that they have "kicked the idea around."

He said deputy candidates undergo a rigorous application process administered with the help of the Rock Island County Merit Commission, and it's a process in which he has confidence.

Sheriff Boyd said his office sometimes hires officers from other departments, many of whom already have undergone psychological screenings. All new deputies are also on a year's probation, he said.

"I believe there is enough in place that, if it isn't a good fit, we'll find out," Sheriff Boyd said.

Dr. Witherspoon said patterns of violence, drug and alcohol use and depression are among the issues he looks for to help predict how a potential officer may respond to stresses on the streets.

He said candidates usually already have been screened for major issues through background checks by the respective police departments, but some issues still could be revealed through his interviews with the candidate.

"You don't have to be perfect; you just have to be free of things that are very concerning," Dr. Witherspoon said.

During a typical psychological screening, he administers personality tests.

The tests help reveal behaviors such as anti-social, volatility or mood problems, unreliability, risk-taking tendencies, irritability and narcissism, and issues such asanxiety, depression, mania, paranoia, suicidal tendencies, substance abuse and excessive dominance.

Dr. Witherspoon reviews test results with the applicant, asking followup questions and discussing the applicant's history. How someone responds can be telling, he said.

"People can lie or disguise what they share or minimize the problem," but he said he can tell when candidates appear too self-doubting or too self-congratulating.

"If they can turn in a profile that looks like it was turned in by Mary Poppins, that can also tell something," Dr. Witherspoon said.

Strong candidates usually show a history of resilience, self-improvement, effective stress management and academic success and have a strong support system of family and friends.

Dr. Witherspoon sends his reports to the police department, which decides whether to hire the candidate. Police officials say poor results from a psychological screening can be the end of the line for an otherwise seemingly qualified candidate.

"Sometimes it's maturity issues," East Moline Police Chief Victor Moreno said. "It's not that they'll never be able to pass the test ... but they're just not ready then."

Milan Police Chief Shawn Johnson said he looks at indicators of a candidate's work ethic, ability to get along with others and how they handle themselves in stressful situations.

"It all comes down to public trust," Chief Brasche said. "Police are asked to solve problems and trauma at a moment's notice, do it quickly and instantly and perfectly, and fix chaotic situations, so it's a lot of pressure.

"You want to hire people that are extremely psychologically sound," he said. "We ask so much of these young people as they come in that you want to have the best ones out there. You don't want someone to abuse the position."

Still, even screenings are no guarantee that a candidate will do well on the job or be able to cope with police work five, 10 or 20 years down the road.

"It is not an easy journey. It's not an easy job to land," Chief Brasche said."And can you be wrong? Absolutely you can be wrong ... we are human just like everybody else."

He said anytime officers struggle with a problem on the job, they are encouraged to seek counseling or turn to experienced officers for advice and support.

"People are not static ? they evolve and change and not always for the better," Dr. Witherspoon said.

However,"we try to gauge people's moral ethic ... they have to be ready to chase down bad guys, but they have to contain themselves, too."

Coptic cleric says he will sue Israeli police

JERUSALEM (AP) ? An Egyptian Coptic cleric who was mistreated during Orthodox Easter services is threatening to sue.

Video supplied to The Associated Press shows Israeli police shoving Arsanious el-Orshalimi and putting him in a headlock. The incident took place during Orthodox Christian Holy Saturday in Jerusalem's Old City earlier this month. The event drew thousands of people to the area, and hundreds of Israeli police were on guard.

A dozen church leaders in the Holy Land later signed a letter expressing concern over the incident.

El-Orshalimi says he will not remain silent and will "take this issue to court because of all the pain that I suffered."

Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said Friday the officers involved are being questioned. He said police will work to prevent such incidents in the future.

Renting vs owning: When is buying a house worth it?

Owning a home builds equity, but sometimes sticking with a rental is a better deal. Those questions and more in this week's mailbag.?

A for rent sign is seen on the front door of a home in Riverhead, New York. According to Hamm, the equity built through home ownership isn't worthwhile if it buries you in debt you can't afford.

I?ve had the privilege this week of eating lunch with a different lunch companion every single day.

This simple act has led to the formulation of a lot of great ideas, a lot of laughs, and a lot of stronger relationships.

Eating lunch with a friend or a person you want to know better doesn?t have to be expensive. Most of my lunches have been leftovers or peanut butter and jelly in a brown paper bag.

Even if it had been expensive, it would have been worth every penny for the great lunchtime conversations.

    Q1: Catch-22 with home loan
?I?m in a catch-22 position and I can?t figure out what to do. I am due with our first child this summer. Currently, my husband and I both work but I will stop receiving paychecks in August. I?m a teacher, and my ultimate plan is to start an in-home daycare/prechool to supplement our income while I stay home. The problem is, we live in a small apartment and I cannot do the daycare situation there. We need to have a house with space to do this.

Problem is, how to qualify to get the house with one income? We live in a very high cost of living area (DC) so I?m worried about qualifying for a loan. We have great credit scores and no debt at all, and about $20,000 in the bank, but my husband only makes about $46K which means we?ll have a hard enough time finding a house much less getting a loan for it. Once I?m not longer making my salary, we will be able to cover all our current bills but will not be able to save any money every month until I?m making some type of income as well. We?re fortunately in good shape besides this (great retirement savings, we live very cheaply and have no debt. We each own a car in good condition and have been saving 2/3 of our income every month for the last 2 years) but soon with half the income, that security will disappear.

If we can?t get a house, we can continue renting, which is basically throwing money away considering how expensive it is around here, and it would keep me from my potential income source. I?m confident that if we have a house (even a small one) with a decent space for this daycare, that I would be able to make at least as much as my current salary. I?m a trained teacher with a master?s in education, and there is a lot of demand in my area for childcare. I think within a year I could work up to making a decent supplemental salary, and we?d have no problem affording a house but it?s the initial qualifying process I worry about.

Any suggestions? Should we go ahead and start looking for loans/talking to a realtor and trying to buy a house, or are we unlikely to qualify? And if it turns out we cannot get a house, do you have any other suggestions for making it over time? My husband is already looking for better paying work, but not having a lot of luck. We really can?t swing moving to a lower cost of living area without any job security, connections, etc. Continuing my current job is not an option, though I could do some smaller-scale babysitting. I feel like the daycare is all I want to do, and it?s our only good option for making it financially, but I am so worried we won?t be able to get a house. I?m not that familiar with the entire home-buying process and don?t know how to move forward with it.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Is there something I?m missing here??
    ?- Jenna

First of all, renting isn?t ?throwing away money? in a lot of situations. Let?s say you?re buying a home for $300,000. With a reasonable thirty year loan, you?re paying almost $1,000 a month in interest. What about property taxes and homeowners insurance? That money just vanishes into thin air ? $1,500 a month, at least. If you can rent for less than that, that?s what you should be doing. In fact, if it?s even close, you?re better off renting because then you don?t have to deal with the cost of maintenance and repairs.

?But I?m building equity!? If you?re spending more on interest, property taxes, homeowner?s insurance, maintenance, and repairs for your home each month than you?re spending on rent, you?re not building equity ? you?re losing it. The only reason you?re not building equity in the apartment in this situation is that you?re not investing that money you?re saving over the costs of home ownership.

I can?t assess what your likelihood of being able to earn signficant money with an in-home daycare actually is. To figure that out, market research would be in order. You can?t simply assume you can put out a shingle and people will beat a path to your door. Is there a competitive market for daycare providers? Are the ones near you all full to the brim or are there spots available at them?

If it is clear that you have a genuine business opportunity in the area after the market research, then I would simply find any kind of work until you get the home loan secured, then reassess what you want to do. However, I don?t think switching to the home situation is the financial no-brainer that you?re making it out to be, though.

    Q2: Haircut value
?What is the value of a good haircut? The barbershop I always use does a great job, but it costs $24 per cut. A new shop across town charges only $11 per cut. I get my hair cut twice a month, so that adds up to serious coinage.
    ?- Ryan

There?s no harm in trying the other place. If you?re not happy with the cut, you can return to your regular barber in two or three weeks to get it fixed.

Very few places produce genuinely bad haircuts. Some might produce cuts that aren?t exactly what you want, but they?re rarely disastrous, particularly on men.

I have found that a barber that can repeatedly produce exactly the cut you want is a valuable thing to have. However, for me, I am that barber. I can get the cut I want with a pair of clippers pretty efficiently.

    Q3: Quality of school matters?
?I?ve decided that I want to pursue my MBA. Is there a caliber of business school (maybe the ?sweet 16? or a top 10 institution) for which you would be willing to quit your job to attend fulltime? Most elite programs don?t have part-time degrees anyway. Is the degree worth the cost (including opportunity cost of not working for 2 years)? Would you pass on a top 10 school and go for a part-time in order to keep your current job?
    ?- Evan

It really depends on what your current job is and your financial state before you make that leap.

If you?re debt free but you?re working at McDonalds, then going to business school is a no-brainer. If you?re making $100,000 a year as a software engineer and you?re carrying a $200,000 mortgage, then there?s probably no business school out there that makes sense.

The question you need to ask yourself is whether you can make ends meet while going to business school. Can you pay your monthly bills? If you can pull it off, then a good school is probably worth it.

    Q4: Making quadruple batches
?I?ve read many books and articles and stories where it is suggested that people make quadruple batches of meals and store the left overs. Whenever I do this I usually wind up with some freezer burnt food that has to be thrown out. It seems wasteful to me.
    ?- Jill

Most people that I know that make double (or more) batches of meals have a schedule where they eat those double batches quickly.

For example, let?s say I make a quadruple batch of lasagna on Saturday the 1st and a quadruple batch of stew on Sunday the 2nd. I would probably pencil in lasagna on Monday the 8th and every other Monday after that, and I?d pencil in stew on Wednesday the 10th and every other Wednesday after that until the food was gone. (On Tuesday, we?d eat leftover lasagna.)

If you?re making quadruple batches of food you don?t want to have that often, then you shouldn?t be making quadruple batches of that particular meal.

Q5: The value of commute length
?you make good points in the financial decisions and quality of life regarding the location of your home. however, a huge deterrent to a good quality of life is the length of a commute. in the area of st louis MO, mass transit is almost nonexistent. we have lived here for many years and our kids live here, so we will not relocate. even before i married, if my job changed, i moved close to it because i couldn?t stand a commute of more than about 15 minutes. now, i see the terrible price many of our children pay by having their parents? arrival home after work delayed by long commutes or worse still, younger kids who are picked up from latchkey programs, get a drive thru McD dinner during their one hour evening commute, and have almost no family time. riding in the car with mom or dad just doesn?t qualify as quality time in my book. further, i believe there is a positive correlation between the length and time of a commute and the terrible divorce rate in this country. people are buying humongous houses in which they seldom get to do much since they are working full time or more and commuting long distances.
    ?- Jimmy

I agree with you to some extent. It really depends on the commute, though.

When I was first working out of college, I had a 25 minute commute to work, but it was entirely on a mass transit system. On that commute, I would read and get caught up on emails. My commute was either part of my productive day or a bit of pleasurable reading time. I didn?t really mind this time at all. I didn?t have the cost of a vehicle, for one, and I could spend that time actually doing something I wanted to do.

On the other hand, if I had to drive for forty five minutes through a crowded metro area, I would consider that a big negative. When I did drive for a commute, I considered the time on the way home to be a mild relaxation from work, but I was still focused on driving (and on the questionable driving behavior of those around me).

There?s also the family considerations. If you?re commuting for 45 minutes, there?s an hour and a half each day that you?re not spending with your family (or engaged in something personally fulfilling if you?re single).

    Q6: Uses for vegetable remains
?What do you do with, say, half a carrot that?s left over from making soup? Most of the time for me it just sits in the fridge and gets brown and I throw it out which seems like a big waste.
    ?- Mal

I save all of that stuff in a bag in the freezer. I just mix all of those spare vegetables together.

When I have a gallon freezer bag full of those scraps, I get out a big pot and toss all of the vegetables into it with a few gallons of water, a dash of salt, and some ground black pepper. I then boil that mix for hours and strain what?s left, saving the liquid.

That liquid is vegetable stock, and it is a fantastic starter for any soup that you want to make. Store it in quart containers in the freezer and pull one or two out whenever you want to make soup (or other dishes that use stock as a base).

    Q7: Cash for emergency fund
?Is cash the right way to go for an emergency fund? An emergency fund is supposed to be money that is easily available to you in an emergency which in my mind means that it should be cash. I know that you do not earn interest on cash that is just lying around but having easy access to money is more important in an emergency than the little bit you make in interest. The only thing that worries me is the risk of having money just lying around somewhere in my house. Perhaps half in an account and half in cash is also an option. What do you think?
    ?- Roger

I think there?s a balance. I keep a few hundred in cash in a hidden spot in my home, but the rest remains in a savings account earning interest.

There are rarely times where I would need to immediately have more than a few hundred in cash in my hand in an absolute emergency. Virtually everything I can think of could wait until I could visit my bank or an ATM at least.

The only scenarios where that isn?t enough are scenarios where having thousands of dollars in cash probably wouldn?t be enough, either. Given that, I?m fine with most of my emergency fund in a savings account.

    Q8: Professional dress
?Recently, I got a great new job that pays more than double what I?m currently making. When I talked to the HR person about it she told me that professional dress is expected. I am a software engineer and I?m not sure entirely what that means. What should I be expecting to spend on a wardrobe?
    ?- Dan

I?d call your office and find out exactly what?s expected in terms of attire. You need to know what people wear during their day-to-day work.

Most jobs like this do have a startup cost where people get their wardrobes into gear, unfortunately. It?s part of the hidden cost of having a higher-paying job.

The change in wardrobe might not be a perfectly comfortable one for you, but it?s a change you?ll get used to.

    Q9: Returning to the workforce
?I have been a stay-at-home mom for about 12 years and I am trying to reenter the workforce with no success. I am in a rocky marriage with no way of getting out without going to live with my elderly parents, who live in an area that does not have an jobs (if I could find one) that would pay me enough to ever live alone. I do not want to be a burden on them, but I am at a lost for how I go about getting someone to give me an opportunity.

I do not have a college education (1-1/2 years at a community college studying business). My last job was as an Administrative Assistant for a pesticide company. I do not know how much longer I will be able to stay in my marriage. Can you give me any advise on what I could do to increase my skills and to make myself marketable again?
    ?- Mindy

First, if you are in an abusive relationship, there are resources you can use that will help you get out of your situation safely. I don?t know what?s going on with your relationship exactly, but it sounds like you really want out of the situation and that it might be an abusive one. If it is, you need to leave now, not later. Abuse should not be tolerated.

Having said that, if it?s just an incompatibility problem or something else, I?d try to pursue work in an area that directly follows your previous employment. Start quietly applying for administrative assistant positions anywhere that you can find them. If you manage to get one, then that?s your chance to change things at home.

Do you have any single (or even married) friends that you could live with for a while? If you have someone that knows what you?re going through, they may be willing to help you more than you expect.

    Q10: Move first?
?My family is about to move to another state and we need to sell our home. Is it a better move to try to start selling it now before we move out or should we wait until we?re gone?
    ?- Angela

Generally, a house looks better and is easier to sell if no one is living there. It?s much more available for people to visit, appears to have much more open space, and is devoid of other people?s personal property and clutter.

If you have a financial need to sell before you move, then that choice is pretty much made for you. It sounds like both options are available to you, though.

If that?s the case, I?d get out of the house and make sure it was ship-shape for selling before putting it on the market.

    Temptation

TemptationEditor?s Note: Nir Eyal writes about the intersection of psychology, technology, and business at?NirAndFar.com. Follow him?@nireyal. How do products tempt us? What makes them so alluring? It is easy to assume we crave delicious food or impulsively check email because we find pleasure in the activity. But pleasure is just half the story. Temptation is more than just the promise of reward. Recent advances in neuroscience allow us to peer into the brain, providing a greater understanding of what makes us want. In 2011, Sriram Chellappan, an?assistant professor of computer science at Missouri University of Science and Technology, gained unheard of access to sensitive information about they way undergraduates were using the Internet. His study tracked students on campus as they browsed the web. Chellappan was looking for patterns, which not only revealed what students were doing online, but provided clues about who they were. ?We believe that your pattern of Internet use says something about you,” Chellappan wrote in the New York Times. “Specifically, our research suggests it can offer clues to your mental well-being.? Chellappan concluded that there was, in fact, predictive power in the data. He found students with early signs of clinical depression used the Internet differently and he could identify students most likely to face mental health issues simply by looking at how they clicked. ?We identified several features of Internet usage that correlated with depression,? wrote Chellappan. ?For example, participants with depressive symptoms tended to engage in very high e-mail usage.” Chellappan developed the technology in hopes of creating an early-warning system to identify struggling students. But his study raised another question, why do people with depression check email more? Alleviating Pain The answer may provide clues about why all of us use the products and services we do in our everyday lives. Psychologists believe people with depression feel negative emotions, like anxiety, more frequently than other people do. There is evidence that the depressed students in Chellappan’s study were using the Internet more because they experience negative mental states more often. To try and feel better, they turned to the web to boost their mood. Finding ways to make ourselves feel better is not something only depressives do. We all seek relief from feeling bad and the brain is primed to help us learn where we can find escape. Just as we might take a Tylenol to relieve a headache, we turn to
