Toshiba BDX5300

At this point, there's a glut of Wi-Fi-equipped, 3D-capable Blu-ray players available for around $150. As a result, the otherwise solid Toshiba BDX5300 is lost in the crowd. This $139.99 (direct) Blu-ray player is affordable and full-featured, but its few outputs and cheap-feeling remote leave it behind similarly priced competitors.

Design
The BDX5300 is attractive, if simply designed. At 1.4 by 17.2 by 7.4 inches (HWD) and just 2.4 pounds, it's one of the slimmest Blu-ray players we've seen yet. The front has a black rectangular faceplate with a silver triangular "chin" under it, which makes it look slightly more interesting than the plain black front panels other Blu-ray players have. There are Eject, Stop, Play, and Power touch-sensitive buttons and a four-character alphanumeric LED display, all of which glow blue. A USB port sits on the right edge of the faceplate, and the disc tray itself is a slim rectangle that's barely larger than a Blu-ray-sized slot.

Besides the power cable, the only connections on the back of the player are an HDMI output, a coaxial audio output, and an Ethernet port. The lack of composite video and analog audio outputs is surprising, even if HDMI is the preferred connection choice. The one front USB port means if you want to watch BD-Live special features, which require external storage since the player doesn't have any onboard, you'll need to keep a USB flash drive sticking out of the front of the device.

The 7.5-inch remote is cheap and simple. The buttons are oblong and circular rubber nubs clustered around a small directional pad. The remote is not illuminated. A dedicated Netflix button lets you access the service through the Blu-ray player quickly. Otherwise, you get the standard red, green, yellow, and blue color buttons with context sensitive functions, along with Subtitle, Audio, Second Audio, Angle, A-B, Repeat, Display, and Connected buttons that cue up other playback and online features.

The BDX5300 accesses online services over Wi-Fi or through an Ethernet connection. The different services are arranged in Music, Video, Photo, and Other categories. They include Pandora (currently the only service in the Music category), Picasa (currently the only service in the Photo category), Netflix, Hulu Plus, Vudu, YouTube, CinemaNow, and Vudu Apps (currently the only service in the Other category, but including a wide selection of apps through the service).

Performance
The player is relatively fast, but in a strange way. Typically, Blu-ray discs without BD-Live features load much faster than discs with BD-Live features. It's the other way around for the BDX5300. Our non-BD-Live test disc, Ralph Bakshi's Wizards 35th Anniversary Edition, loaded in an average of 30.1 seconds. Our BD-Live test disc, The Sitter, loaded in an average of 23.6 seconds, over six seconds faster. Our Editors' Choice LG BP620 ($149.99, 4 stars), by contrast, loaded a non-BD-Live test disc (Robocop) in an average of 21.2 seconds and a BD-Live test disc (The Big Lebowski) in an average of 32.9 seconds. The Panasonic DMP-BDT110 ($134.99, 4 stars) remains the resident speed demon, loading a non-BD-Live test disc in 12.6 seconds and a BD-Live test disc (again, Robocop and The Big Lebowski) in 19.7 seconds. The BDX5300 is speedy for BD-Live discs, but it's just too sluggish for discs that don't have online features. And even though the discs loaded relatively quickly, the overall interface of the BDX5300 felt sluggish to begin with, with tasks like ejecting discs and navigating menus taking just a second too long.

We test video processing with the HQV Blu-ray disc. The BDX5300 handled all motion tasks very well, showing excellent motion tracking at both 30 frames per second video and 24 frames per second film footage. Horizontal motion showed some slight tearing, but it was negligible compared to other Blu-ray players we've tested.

DVD upconversion looks solid but otherwise unremarkable on the BDX5300. In the DVR version of The Sitter, the 20th Century Fox logo appeared relatively crisp and clear. When the actual movie started, noticeable noise in dark scenes appeared and edges looked predictably soft, but the movie remained very watchable. Since you're dealing with 480p resolution source material on DVDs, you can only improve the footage so much, and it simply won't look as good as Blu-ray or other high definition media.

The Toshiba BDX5300 is a solid, relatively fast Blu-ray player, but it does nothing to stand out against other, similarly-priced players. Its remote feels cheap and its few connections limit your options in connecting it to your home theater, and it doesn't offer quite the performance and options of the LG BP620, either. If you can find the BDX5300 on sale, it's a worthy choice, but otherwise you should consider other options.

Revel Systems Debuts An iPad Point-Of-Sale In A Box

atlas_iPad_Cash_Register_for_iPad_POS larger fileRevel?Systems, an iPad point-of-sale company backed by $3.7 million in funding, is today introducing a new hardware product designed to take the place of an Ethernet router. The "Revel Router," as the device is being called, is an Apple-certified "made for iPad" technology that allows shops to run their POS through an Apple iPad. The router connects other components in a retailer or restaurant's POS setup, too, including coin dispensers, barcode scanners, scales, kitchen display systems, kitchen printers, receipt printers, and more. And the company is selling the device as a package deal including an iPad, the router, peripherals, and POS software. More importantly, the system forgoes the need for an ISP-provided Internet connection in order to work - the whole thing can run off the iPad's 3G or 4G.

AMARILLO, Texas (AP) ? Defense attorneys for a Saudi man accused in a plot to bomb Americans made quick work of their case: They rested without calling any witnesses or presenting any evidence.

Closing arguments in the federal trial of Khalid Ali-M Aldawsari in Amarillo are expected Wednesday morning.

The 22-year-old former Texas Tech chemical engineering student faces up to life in prison if convicted of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction. Prosecutors say he had long-planned an attack, amassing nearly all the necessary materials and creating a target list that included former President George W. Bush's home in Dallas.

Prosecutors capped three days of testimony Tuesday by playing a recording of Aldawsari saying he'd get "maximum satisfaction" and would be "smiling" after carrying out a terror attack in the U.S.

Defense attorneys contend he never took the necessary "substantial step" because he didn't make a bomb.

Federal agents secretly searched Aldawsari's apartment and hid microphones therein that they say captured him speaking out loud the night before his Feb. 23, 2011, arrest. Authorities said that Aldawsari was alone when he was recorded.

In the recording, Aldawsari is speaking as if he's someone else commenting on a terror attack that he carried out. He says the perpetrator of the terror attack would be "smiling" and getting "maximum satisfaction" from the destruction caused.

Aldawsari says Americans deserved the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and must die "because you people deserve it" for causing the deaths of others.

"This is the ideology he follows," Aldawsari says on the recording, speaking about himself.

A computer forensics expert testified that Aldawsari had searched online for former President George W. Bush's "farm"; locations where Bush would be signing copies of his book, "Decision Points"; and Bush's home, including an aerial photo of the North Dallas residence.

Capt. David Parker, who is also a detective with the university's police department and a member of a joint terrorism task force, said Aldawsari appeared to be considering an attack at the October 2010 Texas vs Oklahoma football game. The student wrote in his journal that he should "buy a ticket that is higher than the excellent seats" because the police wouldn't bother him. On a scrap of paper found among his belongings, Aldawsari said an explosive could be hidden inside popcorn, Parker testified.

Also Tuesday, authorities showed videos they said they found on a flash drive in Aldawsari's apartment. One showed a masked man speaking in Arabic about the chemicals needed to create picric acid, an explosive. Other agents have testified that Aldawsari sought ? and failed ? to obtain phenol.

"Following these steps, you would get picric acid," FBI forensic examiner Robert Mothershead testified.

Authorities said Aldawsari also kept the recipe for picric acid in several emails and journal entries. In one entry, he said he was close to obtaining phenol and had obtained other necessary items, "so I may use them in missions to please God."

Federal agents secretly searched Aldawsari's apartment in Lubbock twice last year and say they found almost everything needed to build a bomb, including chemicals, beakers, flasks, wiring, a hazmat suit and clocks, which he had bought online.

Agents say they also uncovered handwritten journals, recordings and online postings suggesting Aldawsari had long planned to launch an attack in the U.S.

Authorities say they were tipped to Aldawsari's online purchases by chemical company Carolina Biological Supply of Burlington, N.C., and shipping company Con-way Freight on Feb. 1, 2011. The chemical company reported a suspicious $435 purchase to the FBI, and the shipping company notified Lubbock police and the FBI because it appeared the order wasn't intended for commercial use.

Court documents say Aldawsari wrote in Arabic in his journal that he had been planning a terror attack in the U.S. even before he came to the country on a scholarship, and that it was "time for jihad," or holy war.

Four out of five drivers say they're distracted?

By Paul A. Eisenstein, The Detroit Bureau

If you?ve ever texted while driving or sent out a Tweet, well, you aren?t alone.? In fact, you?re far from the minority, it seems.? A new Harris Poll reveals that more than four out of five motorists admit to making some sort of distracted driving behavior in a typical month.

Men, it turns out, are more likely to engage in this potentially dangerous behavior, according to the latest Harris AutoTechCast study, particularly when it comes to taking or making a phone call.? Younger motorists are more likely to do things like texting.

Some of the behaviors might not normally land on a list of dangerous activities, such as drinking a beverage, but the risky behaviors begin to add up ? to an average 37 different distracted driving activities over the last month, according to Harris Interactive, which conducted the poll.

New Ford Tech Will Aid Drivers Park, Reduce Traffic Gridlock

?Most common on the list is making to taking a call, something that the typical driver does 11 times a month, with motorists drinking beverages behind the wheel eight times, texting five times and e-mailing three times.

Men were more likely to use their cellphones, 12 times a month compared to 10 for women.? Motorists between 18 and 34 were far more likely, on the whole, to engage in distracted driving behaviors, however, about 57 times a month.

Curiously, while data suggested that distracted driving is, if anything, becoming more endemic, the Harris AutoTechCast poll found motorists increasingly interested in advanced automotive safety technologies ? perhaps in the hope of avoiding distracted driving-related accidents.

?While ideally these drivers should practice fewer of these distracted driving habits,? stated Mike Chadsey, Vice President, Automotive Solutions Consultant, Harris Interactive, ?it is also comforting to know that this distracted driving group is aware of the importance of safety features and is actively considering them for their next vehicle purchase.?

Wyoming Has Highest Auto Repair Costs

When it comes to gaining access to new infotainment technologies, motorists want to be able to get there by docking their smartphones ? by nearly a 2-to-1 margin ? over having such features built into the vehicle.

Among apps motorists say they use on their smartphones, 66% named Google Maps, 65% reported Google Search, 64% identified Facebook, 41% named Pandora while just 32% listed Twitter.

Honda Named Automotive Brand of the Year

?Consumers are indicating that they want their automotive technology to help improve safety while giving them more flexibility, even if it costs a little more,? added Chadsey. ?Personalization is the future of the connected car. Drivers want to use technology they already know and love in their vehicles. By integrating technologies they already own, it also eliminates some of the technology usage issues plaguing the industry today.?

The AutoTechCast survey tallied responses from nearly 12,000 Americans over the age of 18 who own or lease their vehicle.
