33095 Calcium Supplements May Raise Odds of Heart Death in Women

By Steven Reinberg
HealthDay Reporter

TUESDAY, Feb. 12 (HealthDay News) ? Women eating a high-calcium diet and taking calcium supplements adding up to more than 1,400 milligrams a day may be running nearly twice the risk of dying from heart disease, a large Swedish study suggests.

Both men and women take calcium supplements to prevent bone loss. The new findings come on the heels of another recent study that found a similar increased risk of death related to calcium intake among men.

?Many older adults increase dietary intake of calcium or take calcium supplements to prevent bone loss and there had been speculation that increased calcium intake with or without vitamin D could improve cardiovascular health,? said Dr. Gregg Fonarow, an American Heart Association spokesman who wasn?t involved in the study.

However, a number of recent studies have suggested that higher dietary intake or calcium supplementation may not only not improve cardiovascular health ? they may be associated with increased risk for cardiovascular events and mortality, said Fonarow, a professor of cardiology at University of California, Los Angeles.

The new report was published in the Feb. 12 online edition of the BMJ.

To see if calcium supplements raised the risk of dying from heart disease, a team led by Dr. Karl Michaelsson, a clinical professor in the department of orthopedic surgical sciences at Uppsala University in Sweden, analyzed data collected on more than 61,000 women enrolled in a study on mammograms.

Over 19 years of follow-up, nearly 12,000 women died ? almost 4,000 dying from cardiovascular disease, about 1,900 from heart disease and 1,100 from stroke, the researchers found.

The highest rates of death were seen among women whose calcium intake was higher than 1,400 milligrams a day, the researchers noted. On the other hand, women who took less than 600 milligrams of calcium a day were also at an increased risk of death.

Moreover, women taking 1,400 milligrams of calcium a day and also using a supplement had even a higher risk of dying than women not using supplements, Michaelsson?s group found.

All in all, women getting more than 1,400 milligrams of calcium a day were more than twice as likely to die than women getting 600 to 999 milligrams a day, the researchers said.

The U.S. Office of Dietary Supplements recommends 1,000 to 1,200 milligrams of calcium a day for most adults.

According to the study authors, diets very low or very high in calcium can override normal control by the body, causing changes in blood levels of calcium.

Rather than worry about increasing calcium intake of those getting enough through their diet, emphasis should be placed on people with a low intake of calcium, the authors suggest.

Taylor Wallace, a representative of the supplement industry, faults this study because, he said, it was not specifically meant to address calcium supplements and heart disease.

?We are comparing apples and oranges,? said Wallace, who is senior director for Scientific & Regulatory Affairs at the Council for Responsible Nutrition. He noted that in the new study, the data that researchers used to draw their conclusions looked at diet and cancer, not whether calcium supplements were bad for the heart.

?Still, there is not a single human cause-and-effect study that demonstrates a hazard for calcium either from the diet or supplements and cardiovascular disease,? he said.

Although the new study tied total calcium intake to increased risk of death from heart disease in women, it didn?t establish a cause-and-effect relationship.

Wallace did say it?s important to know how much calcium a person is getting from diet and supplements. ?It is important to talk with your doctor to make sure you are getting the right amount for you,? he said.

For his part, heart association spokesman Fonarow said: ?While further studies are needed, calcium supplements should be used only after careful consideration of whether the potential benefits in terms of bone health outweigh the potential cardiovascular risks.?

Marlins Baseball ? It?s Electric!

http%3A%2F%2Fchicago.barstoolsports.com%2Frandom-thoughts%2Fmarlins-baseball-its-electric%2F

Get em while they?re hot Miami! Giancarlo Stanton is about to set your city on fire!

This kind of puts White Sox home games in perspective. Yeah it?s not a good look to be one of only 7 teams not to crack 2 million in home attendance last year but 1,965,955 million is still a lot better than the fucking 4 spot that the Marlins are about to throw on the board in 2013. There legitimately might be a chance there?s a game this year attended by zero people this year. Just two teams on the field, and like 50 illegal immigrant Cubans in the stand selling hot dogs and Corona light to nobody. Guess it wasn?t a good idea to literally trade your entire team in the off-season.

Taylor Swift kicks off Grammys, Adele wins best pop solo award

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Country-pop singer Taylor Swift brought the circus to the Grammy stage on Sunday, kicking off the annual awards with a lively performance and British singer Adele picked up the show's first award.

The Black Keys, Skrillex and Gotye started the night strong, each picking up multiple awards prior to the televised ceremony.

The 55th Grammy Awards will hand out their gramophone-shaped trophies in more than 80 categories, but only a handful of winners are announced during the three-hour live telecast airing on CBS. More than 60 categories were announced prior to the televised show.

The top categories are dominated this year by male artists, with British folk band Mumford & Sons, indie-pop trio FUN. and R&B singer Frank Ocean going into the show with six nominations each, including Album of the Year.

Swift kicked off the live telecast dressed as a ringmaster with a circus-themed performance of her infectious chart-topping hit "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," backed by dancers in jester and acrobat costumes.

The 23-year-old singer picked up an early Grammy for her collaboration with T-Bone Burnett and The Civil Wars on the song "Safe and Sound" from "The Hunger Games" movie soundtrack.

Britain's Adele, 24, who swept the Grammys with six major awards last year, landed another this year for Best Pop Solo Performance for her live rendition of "Set Fire to The Rain."

The singer recognized the other female nominees in the audience, saying, "We work so hard, we make it look so easy."

Presenting the award, rapper Pitbull joked that Jennifer Lopez, who joined him onstage in an asymmetric dress with a daring slit up to the top of her thigh, "inspired the memo," referring to an advisory issued by CBS asking all performers and presenters to keep their breasts, buttocks and genitals covered.

VETERANS AND NEWCOMERS

The Grammys have a reputation for pairing up old-timers and newcomers, and this year had several collaborations.

Veteran Elton John took the stage with rising British star Ed Sheeran, 21, to sing a stripped down duet of "The A Team," Sheeran's song for which he's nominated in the Song of the Year category.

One of the night's leading nominees, New York indie-pop trio FUN., lived up to their name with a performance of "Carry On," while rain fell on stage, soaking the band as they played.

The band, which received six nominations, was the only act to be nominated in the top four categories of Album, Song and Record of the Year and Best New Artist.

Rockers The Black Keys, formed by Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney, started the night strong, picking up two Grammys - Best Rock Album for "El Camino" and Best Rock Song for "Lonely Boy." Auerbach was also named the Producer of the Year in the non-classical category.

The band went into the night with five nominations, including top categories Album of the Year and Record of the Year.

British folk band Mumford & Sons went into Sunday's awards with a leading six nominations. They picked up one win for Best Long Form Music Video for "Big Easy Express," a collaboration with Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, and Old Crow Medicine Show.

Australian singer Gotye, 32, picked up two Grammys for Best Alternative Album for "Making Mirrors" and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for "Somebody That I Used To Know" featuring Kimbra.

DJ Skrillex, 25, who won three Grammy awards last year, picked up three more, including Best Dance/Electronica Album for "Bangarang."

Jay-Z and Kanye West picked up two awards, Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song for their collaboration "N****s in Paris." Jay-Z's wife, Beyonce, won Best Traditional R&B Performance for "Love on Top."

Boeing completes 'uneventful' 787 test flight

CHICAGO - Boeing Co. completed what it called an uneventful flight on Saturday of a test 787 Dreamliner, its first since the airplanes were grounded more than three weeks ago after a series of battery-related problems.

The test flight to gather detailed information on the airplane's lithium-ion batteries lasted two hours and 19 minutes, taking off from and returning to Boeing Field in Seattle, Boeing said.

"The crew reports that the flight was uneventful," Boeing said in a statement.

The 50 Dreamliners in commercial service were grounded worldwide on Jan. 16 after a series of battery-related incidents including a fire on board a parked 787 at Boston's Logan International Airport and an in-flight problem on another airplane in Japan.

The groundings have cost airlines tens of millions of dollars, with no solution yet in sight.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said on Thursday it would allow 787 test flights, under more stringent rules, to monitor the batteries in flight.

Boeing said the information gathered during the flight was part of the investigations into the battery events that occurred in January and that additional details could not be shared.

The airplane is Boeing's fifth 787 flight test airplane, marked as ZA005, and the only member of the test fleet in service. The flight had a crew of 13, including pilots and testing personnel, Boeing said.

Boeing said no flights of the airplane were planned on Sunday, but it planned to resume flights early in the coming week. Boeing does not provide advance flight schedules.

Plane with Guinean delegation crashes in Liberia

MONROVIA, Liberia (AP) ? A plane carrying senior officials from Guinea to Liberia crashed near Liberia's largest airport on Monday, killing Guinea's army chief of staff and five others, officials said.

Guinea said it has named an interim chief of staff.

"I have the profound regret of informing the people of Guinea of the tragic military plane accident that happened this Monday, Feb. 11, 2013 around 7:30 a.m. in Liberia," Guinea's presidency said in a statement through its ministry of defense. "This accident cut short the lives of six members of the delegation led by Gen. Souleymane Kelefa Diallo; the army chief of staff and five members of this team."

The presidency said a military journalist for the ministry of defense was among those killed in the crash. Guinea called for three days of mourning for the delegation that was flying to Liberia's capital, Monrovia.

Liberia's Information Minister Lewis Brown said that the plane crashed in Charlesville, near Liberia's largest airport, some 45 kilometers (28 miles) south of Monrovia, the capital.

Two pilots were also killed in the crash, according to a Guinean aviation official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not permitted to speak to the press. The official said that this plane was bought for Guinea's air force for $12 million.

Gen. Namory Traore has been appointed the interim army chief of staff, said a statement from the office of President Alpha Conde.

Liberia's President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf confirmed the crash while speaking at an Armed Forces ceremony on Monday. The delegation was flying to Liberia for the celebrations. She called for a moment of silence for those involved in the crash and declared Tuesday a day of mourning.
