Dempsey says US considering use of force in Syria

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The nation's top military officer tells a Senate committee the Obama administration is deliberating whether to use military power in Syria, where a civil war entering its third year has killed almost 93,000 people.

Army Gen. Martin Dempsey says during congressional testimony Thursday that he has provided President Barack Obama with options for the use of force in Syria.

Dempsey used the term "kinetic strikes," and added the "issue is under deliberation inside of our agencies of government."

But Dempsey did not provide additional details. He says the decision on whether to engage militarily is one for U.S. elected officials to make.

The Senate Armed Services Committee is considering Dempsey's nomination for a second term as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

U.S. U-17 Men?s National Team wins the International Tournament in Japan

NIIGATA, Japan ? The U.S. Under-17 Men?s National Team defeated the Niigata All-Stars 2-0 to win the International Tournament in Niigata, Japan.

Andrija Novakovich scored in his third straight match to put the U.S. ahead 1-0 in the 60th minute. Rubio Rubin added a second in the 80th minute and the U.S. took home the tournament title with three straight victories.

The U.S. U-17 MNT kicked off the tournament with a 2-1 win against Japan and followed up with a 4-2 win against Croatia.

Harvesting waste heat from power stations and even vehicle exhaust pipes could soon provide a valuable supply of electricity.

A small team of Monash University researchers working under the Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence for Electromaterials Science (ACES) has developed an ionic liquid-based thermocell. Thermocells are based on harnessing the thermal energy from the difference in temperature between two surfaces and converting that energy into electrical energy.

Led by Monash University researcher and Australian Laureate Fellow Professor Doug MacFarlane and Monash University PhD student Theodore Abraham, the collaborative project developed the thermocell device with the highest power outputs yet reported and no carbon emissions.

The new thermocell could be used to generate electricity from low grade steam in coal fired power stations at temperatures around 130C. This would be implemented by having the steam pass over the outer surface of the hot electrode to keep it hot while the other electrode is air or water cooled.

Professor MacFarlane said the breakthrough included the development of a novel ionic liquid-based redox electrolyte.

"We have found that it can work at elevated temperatures typical of important heat sources, as opposed to water-based systems, which cannot operate at temperatures above 100 degrees Celsius," Professor MacFarlane said.

"The device offers the possibility of a cheap and flexible design suitable for harvesting waste heat in the 100- to 200-degrees Celsius range."

PhD student Theodore Abraham said that by using heat already produced in industrial processes that would otherwise be untapped, the thermocell is an attractive method of relieving some of the present reliance on fossil fuels.

"The major benefit of a thermocell is that it harnesses energy that is already readily out there; you're just harnessing energy that is otherwise lost to surroundings," Mr Abraham said.

Mr Abraham was supervised by Dr Jenny Pringle of Deakin University who said the development was a significant achievement for a PhD student.

"The advance we made with this system was that we are generating more electrical energy than any previous power cell in this temperature range," Dr Pringle said.

ACES Director Professor Gordon Wallace said that it took a multitude of skills to tackle complex issues as encountered here.

"Our unique research environment within ACES provides an opportunity to acquire these skills in a cutting edge research environment," Dr Wallace said.

Mr Abraham's research is published in the journal Energy and Environmental Science. A copy of the paper is available on request.

UK Publisher Transforms Books Into Visual Art - Indy Posted

(AP) ? Massachusetts voters are heading to the polls to pick a new U.S. senator.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Edward Markey and Republican Gabriel Gomez scrambled to energize supporters and mobilize get-out-the-vote efforts in the hours leading up to Tuesday's special election to succeed John Kerry in the U.S. Senate.

Both candidates made a series of campaign stops Monday, culminating with election eve rallies while their campaigns cranked up their all-important ground games designed to get as many of their voters to the polls as possible on a day when statewide turnout was expected to be light.

Gomez was scheduled to vote early Tuesday in his hometown of Cohasset, with Markey casting his ballot later in the morning in Malden.

Markey, 66, has led in the polls, but said he's taking nothing for granted.

"There is no overconfidence in this entire operation," Markey told reporters after an evening rally Monday in Malden.

The longtime Democratic member of the Massachusetts U.S. House delegation explained that his campaign has called or rang the doorbells of 3 million prospective voters in the last four days.

"That's the sign of an organization working hard right up to the finish line," he added.

Gomez, 47, is a political newcomer and former Navy SEAL who worked for a Boston-based private equity firm before jumping into the race.

Gomez was also urging his supporters to get themselves to the polls and to remind their friends and family members to vote, too.

"Tell your friends. Tell your friends to tell their friends they need to vote," Gomez said at a rally in Quincy with former GOP U.S. Sen. Scott Brown on Monday evening.

"They think there's going to be a low turnout. There may be a low turnout on their side. That's fine with me. But I know our side and it's a broad side," he added.

Massachusetts state Secretary William Galvin said Monday that he expected a lackluster turnout on Tuesday, with no more than 1.6 million of the state's 4.3 million registered voters to cast ballots in the special election, well below the 2.2 million who voted in a 2010 special election, won by Brown, to succeed the late Sen. Edward Kennedy.

Based on a number of factors, including absentee ballots and the relatively few inquiries to his office about the election, the current race was not matching the intensity of the 2010 election, Galvin said.

Markey has held a fundraising advantage throughout the campaign, having spent more $8.6 million on the race through the end of the last reporting period on June 5, compared to $2.3 million by Gomez, according to Federal Election Commission records.

Also on the ballot Tuesday is Richard Heos, who is affiliated with the Twelve Visions Party.

Temperatures are predicted to climb into the 90's again Tuesday.

Polls are open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
