California teachers fund reviewing private equity gun investment

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The California State Teachers' Retirement System (CalSTRS) said on Monday it was reviewing its investment with Cerberus Capital Management LP, the private equity firm that controls Bushmaster Firearms International, in light of last week's school shooting in Connecticut.

With $155 billion in assets under management, CalSTRS is the largest teachers' fund and the second-largest pension fund in the United States, making it a powerful voice in the investment community that may influence others in reaction to the shooting.

"At this point our investment branch is examining the Cerberus investment to determine how best to move forward given the tragic events of last Friday in Newtown, Connecticut," Ricardo Duran, a spokesman for the public pension fund manager, said in an email.

CalSTRS had invested $751.4 million with Cerberus by the end of March 2012, according to its website. Cerberus owns Madison, North Carolina-based Freedom Group Inc, which includes Bushmaster, the manufacturer of the AR-15 rifle used by the shooter in the Newtown killings.

Spokespeople for Cerberus and Freedom Group did not respond to requests for comment.

CalSTRS has disclosed investments in three Cerberus funds that were raised between 2003 and 2008. It was not immediately clear which of the three funds Cerberus had used to invest in Freedom Group or how broad CalSTRS' review of its commitment to Cerberus was.

Investments in private equity, which involve fund managers buying, reorganizing and then selling companies in a bid to make a profit, are notoriously illiquid. A private equity fund usually has a ten-year lifespan and investors wishing to exit may have to find another party willing to buy their stake in the fund.

Cerberus acquired Bushmaster in 2006 and later merged it with other gun companies to create Freedom Group, which reported net sales of $677.3 million for the nine months ending September 2012, up from $564.6 million in the corresponding period a year ago.

Founded in 1992 by Stephen Feinberg and William Richter, New York-based Cerberus has over $20 billion under management invested and shares its name with a mythical three-headed dog that in Greek mythology guards the entrance to the underworld.

Newtown's schools remained closed on Monday after a weekend of mourning that followed Adam Lanza's shooting spree on Friday that claimed 28 lives, including those of 20 young children, his mother's and his own.

Police said Lanza was armed with hundreds of bullets in high-capacity magazines of about 30 rounds each for the Bushmaster AR-15 rifle and two handguns he carried into the school, and had a fourth weapon, a shotgun, in his car outside.

A growing number of U.S. lawmakers - including a leading pro-gun senator - called on Monday for a look at curbing assault weapons like the one used in a massacre at a Connecticut grade school, a sign that attitudes toward gun control laws could be shifting.

NATO rejects Iranian accusations on missile deployment in Turkey

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - NATO's secretary-general on Monday rejected charges by Iran's armed forces chief that the Western alliance was risking a world war with plans to put Patriot anti-missile systems near Turkey's border with Syria, saying the move was purely defensive.

NATO agreed this month to send Patriot missiles to Turkey to protect its ally against possible attack from neighboring Syria, where a 21-month-old civil war is raging. Turkey has harbored some Syrian rebels and refugees, and there have been episodes of gunfire from Syria hitting Turkish territory.

"I completely denounce these (Iranian) allegations. We have made clear right from the outset that the deployment of Patriots is a purely defensive measure," NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen told a news conference after talks with Belgian Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo. "We are there to defend and protect our ally Turkey. We have no offensive intentions whatsoever."

Rasmussen said he believed the only people who might be concerned about NATO's pending deployment of Patriot missiles were "actors that might have silly ideas to use their missile capabilities for offensive purposes.

"But I hope that the fact that we have deployed Patriot missiles in Turkey can act as an effective deterrent so that no one would even think about attacking Turkey," he said.

General Hassan Firouzabadi, Iran's army chief of staff, was quoted on Saturday as calling for NATO not to deploy the Patriots in Turkey, which also borders Iran.

"Each one of these Patriots is a black mark on the world map, and is meant to cause a world war," Firouzabadi said, according to the Iranian Students' News Agency. "They are making plans for a world war, and this is very dangerous for the future of humanity and for the future of Europe itself."

The United States, Germany and the Netherlands are sending a total of six Patriot batteries to Turkey but they are not expected to be operational for several more weeks.

Doctor: Hector Camacho has died after being taken off life support

Vani Hari, the food writer behind the wildly successful blog, Food Babe, was lucky when she graduated from college: She landed a great job right away. That?s a golden ticket for any recent graduate who has hit the job market during the worst economic slump in decades, but Hari?s luck was even better than most. Her job catered all her meals. She'd hit the jackpot. That is, she says, until she gained almost 30 pounds on her small frame in just a few months.

Marriage proposal carved at historic site

Archaeologists are known for discovering tombs, pyramids, paintings and gold treasures, but now two researchers report the discovery of something rather different, and newer ? a marriage proposal, carved in stone.

Etched in large letters on a sandstone outcrop just south of a decommissioned quarantine station in Manly, Australia (a suburb of Sydney), it reads: "Rebecca will you marry me? Tim."

Researchers don't know who this couple was or if Rebecca accepted Tim's proposal. However the inscription, which by its relatively unweathered appearance was likely carved within the past 10 years, adds a bit of modern romance to a place that had a difficult past.

"I like to think that Tim kind of went up ahead and made the inscription and took Rebecca up there with a bottle of Champagne and an engagement ring," said Annie Clarke, an archaeologist at the University of Sydney, in an interview with LiveScience. "You can make up all sorts of stories."

The North Head Quarantine Station, as it is known, was in operation from 1828 to 1984 and was used to hold people (mainly newly arrived travelers) suspected of having an infectious disease, examples being smallpox, influenza and plague. The station would prove to be the final stop for more than 500 souls who never made it out alive. Clarke and her colleagues think Tim's proposal dates to after the station was shut down and incorporated into a park.

Today, the station is an important Australian heritage site. It is considered by some to be one of the most haunted places in Australia and is a popular spot for " ghost tours," a number of which can be seen on YouTube.

Inscriptions from those quarantined
Modern-day archaeologists are tackling the history of the station, on a more scientific basis, by investigating the nearly 1,000 inscriptions, carved in stone, of those who had to live there. [ See Photos of Proposal & Other Inscriptions ]

"You've got over 150 years of quarantine there," said Clarke, who along with Ursula Frederick, a doctoral student at Australian National University, reported on the marriage proposal, along with other inscriptions, in a recent edition of the journal Archaeology in Oceania.

Clarke and Frederick note in their paper that 13,000 people were quarantined at the station throughout its history. An estimated 572 of these people died and were buried in nearby cemeteries, a mortality rate of about one in 25 over the station's life span.

The artistry on some of the inscriptions is "absolutely amazing," Clarke said.

"There are a couple that are these kinds of heads that are carved into the rock that look like medallions," she said. About 20 inches by 20 inches (50 centimeters by 50 centimeters), they are shaped "like a bust" with one of them appearing to depict a sailor.

Another interesting inscription, carved in relief, reads "RMS (Oct) (1895) Cuzco, In Loving Memory of Irish Stew." Clarke said, "We are never quite sure whether that's (Irish stew) a nickname or whether the food was so bad on the ship they're actually missing their Irish stew from home."

Act of remembrance
One particularly well-carved inscription was framed in relief by a stonemason from Scotland named John Howie. On June 11, 1879, the ship he was traveling on, the Samuel Plimsoll, reached Sydney. Historical records show 12 people did not survive the journey, including the carver's infant son William Howie.

When John Howie carved the inscription recording their arrival in quarantine he drew a star above the word "ship" and listed five of the ship's senior staff, notably excluding the ship's surgeon Pringle Hughes (he may not have been happy with his services), Clarke said.

    4. Bulgaria claims to find Europe's oldest town

At the very bottom of the inscription Howie etched in "462 emigrants," a number that included all who were born during the journey and those who died, including his son.

"In carving those three numbers, 4, 6 and 2, Howie must have felt acutely aware of their significance," Clarke and Frederick write in their paper. "In knowing a little more of the inscription's back story we, too, become aware of the loss that this act of remembrance enfolds within it."

PadFone 2 surfaces in video, ASUS CEO gives viewers a brief tour (video) (update: leaked press shots)

A launch event invitation has already given us a glimpse of the ASUS PadFone 2, but Bloomberg TV India caught up with the firm's CEO Jerry Shen and snagged a video tour of the device before its October 16th reveal. The second iteration of the PadFone packs a 4.7-inch HD (presumably 720p) screen and 13-megapixel camera, which jives with specs on supposedly leaked packaging. Rather than having to fuss with a cover flap to slide the smartphone into its tablet shell, users will be able to dock the device straight into a lighter and thinner slate component. Other details are scarce, but we're sure to find out more when the curtain is ceremoniously pulled back next Tuesday. In the meantime, you can forge past the break to see footage of the hybrid starting at the 1:40 mark.

Update: The ever-prolific evleaks has just tweeted out a glamour shot of the PadFone 2 and its accompanying tablet dock.

Update 2: Evleaks has tweeted additional pictures which we've collected in the gallery below for your perusal.

What Apple Stock Teachs Us About Investing And Wall Street

Apple is a great company and if you've owned stock for any reasonable amount of time, you are a happy investor. ?We can learn a lot about investing looking at Apple. ?We can learn plenty about Wall Street at the same time.

Apple was just about $100 in 2009 and has been $700 recently. ?Wow. ?Nice win. ?Pretty much every mutual fund owns it and certainly most every hedge fund has owned it at some time and if it continues higher, they will all own it at the end of the year to make themselves look good on paper.

Lesson One - good stocks continue to go higher, looking at a chart, its pretty much a 45' angle with some pullbacks.

Lesson Two - even super great well performing stocks have significant pullbacks which is usually when supposed long term investors sell (and later wish they hadn't).

Lesson Three - eventually all growth companies and their stocks become too large to grow at the fantastic levels of the recent past and level out, Intel is a wonderful example, Microsoft too.

Lesson Four - you probably don't own it because if you did, your stockbroker or financial advisor probably sold it just as quickly because of commissions.

Lesson Five - Wall Street will get it wrong again. ?Over forty brokerage firms cover Apple and only one has a hold rating, no sells and plenty of buys and strong buys. ?REALLY? ?It is?reminiscent?of the tech bubble when almost no analysts would dare tell investors to sell anything.

HBT: Don't read Cardinals' last rites just yet

I know the Cardinals are crumbling like a cookie right now, but there is hope in store. The upcoming schedule:

Four games against the equally crumbling Dodgers;

  • Three games against the Houston LoLStros;
  • Three games against the Chicago Cubs; and
  • Three more games against the LoLStros again.

Yes, they end against the Nationals and the Reds,* but both of those teams will have long since clinched by then and should be resting starters.

The Phillies and Brewers can charge all they want, but I think the Cardinals still have a great shot.

*I originally omitted the Reds from the Cardinals schedule. I?m sure they would like to do that too, but alas, they have to play the games.

Australian police arrest man on terror charge

SYDNEY (AP) ? Australian police said Thursday that they arrested a man in connection with suspected terrorism offenses during raids in which they seized firearms, computer equipment and a USB stick containing what they said were "violent extremist materials."

Officers swooped onto properties in six Melbourne suburbs Wednesday in a simultaneous raid, the Australian Federal Police and Victoria state police said in a joint statement. The name of the 23-year-old man they arrested was not released.

Among the police targets was an Islamic bookstore called the Al-Furqan Islamic Information Centre. The center's representatives did not respond to calls and emails Thursday, though a spokesman on Wednesday confirmed that police spent about 12 hours inside and took several items.

Steve Fontana, Victoria police assistant commissioner for crime, said police had identified no immediate threats to public safety.

"We will continue to work to ensure that all steps are taken to protect all members of the community," he said.

The man who was arrested was expected to be charged Thursday with collecting or making documents likely to facilitate terrorist acts. If convicted, he could face a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison. Police said he was hospitalized with stomach pains on Thursday morning.

On its website, the Al-Furqan center says it hosts an Islamic book store and library and offers youth activities, daily prayers and classes.

Terrorism expert Greg Barton, director of Monash University's Centre for Islam and the Modern World, said the Al-Furqan center represents the "fringe of the fringe."

"Their talk is extreme on their website ? they've got a link to an interview with Anwar al-Awlaki, the former Yemeni-American leader to al-Qaida," he said. "So there's no question they're flying their colors in a fairly flagrant fashion."

Still, the group only attracts a few dozen regular members, has no broad influence and had garnered little attention until Wednesday's raids, Barton said.

"They'd ordinarily be a group that's all talk and no action except for the possibility somebody might take on board their ideas and move on and go abroad," Barton said. "It's got stepping stone potential, I think, which is why the authorities were watching them."

Over the past few weeks, the group made several postings on its Facebook page and website referencing a "spy" that had been uncovered in their community. It was not clear from the postings what specifically the group was referring to.

Barton said he suspects that once the group began posting publicly about being under surveillance, authorities decided to move in.

Police declined to comment on the spying allegations.

Kraft expects long-term growth at new NA foods co

NEW YORK (AP) ? Kraft says its new North American food company will be poised to deliver long-term profit and revenue growth, while also returning cash to its shareholders.

Kraft Foods Inc. is set to split into two companies next month. One will keep the Kraft name and focus on North American grocery brands such as Velveeta and Oscar Mayer. The other will be called Mondelez and focus on snacks such as Oreos that are sold internationally.

Northfield, Ill.-based Kraft told investors Friday at a conference in Boston that it expects the North American grocery company to post a 2013 profit of about $2.60 per share. The prediction includes 26 cents per share in restructuring costs.

Its management team also plans to recommend an annual dividend of $2.

Feuding Russian oligarchs wait for London verdict

A judge in London was due Friday to give a verdict in the long-running legal battle between British-based billionaire Roman Abramovich and fellow Russian tycoon Boris Berezovsky.

Abramovich, who owns European club football champions Chelsea, and Berezovsky have spent a reported 100 million pounds fighting the case, which has involved an army of lawyers.

Berezovsky, 66, is suing 45-year-old Abramovich for more than ?3.0 billion, claiming he "betrayed" him and "intimidated" him into selling shares in the Russian oil company Sibneft for a "mere 1.3 billion dollars".

The case in the High Court in London, which started in October, has thrown light on the lavish lifestyles of the oligarchs, and the political influence that Berezovsky wielded when Boris Yeltsin was Russian president.

Berezovsky has alleged breach of trust and breach of contract, but Abramovich firmly denies the allegations.

He has told the court that Berezovsky was paid millions of pounds for his services as a "political godfather" but was not a business partner of his.

Berezovsky fled Russia in 2000 after he fell out with Vladimir Putin during his first term as president.

Flood insurance deadline approaches for those affected by Little ...

RUIDOSO The 30-day waiting period waiver for purchase of National Flood Insurance is fast approaching the communities surrounding the Little Bear fire.

The deadline to apply for flood insurance under NFIP is Tuesday.

Any policies written after Tuesday's deadline are subject to the standard 30-day waiting period.

Flash floods, particularly common after wildfires, can occur within minutes after the onset of a rainstorm. Even areas that are not traditionally flood-prone are at risk due to changes to the landscape caused by fire.

Citizens whose communities participate in the NFIP are eligible to purchase NFIP flood insurance.

Participating communities are: Lincoln County, Ruidoso, Ruidoso Downs, Carrizozo and Capitan. Participating communities agree to adopt and enforce ordinances that meet or exceed FEMA requirements to reduce the risk of flooding. As a result, flood insurance premium rates are discounted.

For information about NFIP visit http://floodsmart.gov or call (800) 427-2419.

Minnesota State, Mankato Department of Theatre & Dance News Release 8-29-2012

?The Minnesota State University, Mankato Department of Theatre & Dance will open its 2012-13 seasons with David Mamet?s ?November,? 7:30 p.m. Sept. 19-22 in the Andreas Theatre of the Earley Center for Performing Arts. It is the first show of the Studio season.

It?s November in a Presidential election year and incumbent Charles Smith?s chances for re-election are looking grim. Approval ratings are down, his money?s running out and nuclear war might be imminent. This is its Minnesota State Mankato debut; it contains mature language and themes.

Individual tickets for ?November? are $10 regular, $9 for senior citizens, youth 16 and under and groups of 15 or more, $8 for current Minnesota State students. Individual tickets for this show, as well as all shows in the season, go on sale Monday, Sept. 17, at MSUTheatre.com

Lenovo IdeaTab A2107 gets formal unveiling at IFA 2012: a ruggedized, 7-inch Android 4.0 slate (hands-on photos)

Lenovo IdeaTab A2107 gets formal unveiling at IFA 2012 a ruggedized, 7inch Android 40 slate handson photos

Lenovo just announced its IdeaTab A2107 at IFA here today. The ruggedized Android 4.0 slate, powered by a dual-core MTK Cortex A9 CPU clocked at 1GHz, adds a buffer of protection to its 7-inch expanse with a soft matte, roll cage enclosure -- perfect for the accident-prone or the outdoorsy demo it's being marketed toward. The entry-level tab's 1024 x 600 display is no screamer, putting it on par with the very 2011 Kindle Fire, but the company has loaded it up with radios for WCDMA / GSM, WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and FM radio via built-in antenna. As far as storage goes, users will be able to choose among WiFi-only or 3G models in 4GB, 8GB and 16GB configurations, all expandable via microSD. No pricing or release information has been made available, aside from a vague September 2012 window, so if you're keen on this modest tablet, sate your appetite with the gallery below.

Warm Arctic sets record for summer sea ice melt

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Critical ice in the Arctic Ocean melted to record low levels this sweltering summer and that can make weather more extreme far away from the poles, scientists say.

The National Snow and Ice Data Center reported Monday that the extent of Arctic sea ice shrank to 1.58 million square miles and is likely to melt more in the coming weeks. That breaks the old record of 1.61 million square miles set in 2007.

The North Pole region is an ocean that mostly is crusted at the top with ice. In the winter, the frozen saltwater surface usually extends about 6 million square miles, shrinking in summer and growing back in the fall. That's different from Antarctica, which is land covered by ice and snow and then surrounded by sea ice.

Normally sea ice in the Arctic reaches its minimum in mid-September and then starts refreezing. But levels on Sunday shrank 27,000 square miles ? about the size of West Virginia ? beyond the old record.

Figures are based on satellite records dating back to 1979. The ice center bases its figures on averages calculated over five days.

Data center scientist Ted Scambos said the melt can be blamed mostly on global warming from man-made emissions of greenhouse gases. There are natural factors involved too, including a storm that chewed up a significant amount ice earlier this month. But, he said, dramatic summer sea ice losses in all but one year since 2007, continuous thin ice, and warm air temperatures show a pattern that can only be explained by climate change.

"It really does imply that the Arctic is moving to a new state," said NASA ice systems program scientist Tom Wagner. "The Arctic is changing."

Wagner and Scambos said in 2007 some people thought it was just an odd year that caused the dramatic melt, but years like this one show something bigger is happening.

This milestone is a "substantial step" to the day when there will be no significant sea ice in the Arctic in the summer, said NASA chief scientist Waleed Abdalati.

"Why do we care?," Abdalati, an ice scientist, asked. "This ice has been an important factor in determining the climate and weather conditions under which modern civilization has evolved."

Scientists sometimes call the Arctic the world's refrigerator and this is like leaving the fridge door open, Scambos said.

"This is kind of a knob on global weather," Wagner said. "We don't know the impact yet" of fiddling with it.

Scientists say Arctic sea ice helps moderate temperatures further south in the winter and summer. A study earlier this year in the peer-reviewed journal Geophysical Research Letters linked some of the factors behind Arctic sea ice loss to higher probabilities of extreme weather "such as drought, flooding, cold spells and heat waves."

Scientists also say sea ice is crucial for polar bears and other animals.

Wagner said the changes in Arctic sea ice fits with glacier loss in Alaska and Canada and ice loss in Greenland. Earlier this summer, NASA satellites reported a dramatic melt in Greenland, where nearly every part of its massive ice sheet started melting, something that last happened in 1889.

Ohio State University ice scientist Jason Box has been monitoring Greenland, where he said temperatures have sometimes been 9 to 18 degrees warmer than normal this summer and the ice is reflecting far less heat ? and thus absorbing more energy ? than ever before.

Global warming physics for years has been saying if greenhouse gases are causing climate change, the Arctic will feel it first with loss of sea ice and melt in snow and ice on land, Box said.

"We're in a declining trend because the Earth is getting warmer," Scambos said. "It's going to continue to be a series of shrinking ice extents year by year... We're not going back."
