-SPIKES TAKE ON SCRAPPERS IN PENULTIMATE GAME OF ROAD TRIP: The State College Spikes look to rebound from a tough loss on Thursday as they face the Mahoning Valley Scrappers in the second game of a three-game set at Eastwood Field. The Spikes swept a three-game series from the Scrappers at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park this past weekend. Mahoining Valley holds a 34-30 all-time series lead and a 20-11 lead in games played in Ohio.

-LAST GAME: The Spikes came back from a 4-0 deficit to take the lead, but the Mahoning Valley Scrappers had the last response as they scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 6-5 victory last night at Eastwood Field. State College scored four runs in the third, and David Valesente's RBI single in the sixth put the Spikes up by a run. But Mahoning Valley was able to get five hits in the eighth off Tom Harlan and score the go-ahead runs. Jairo Kelly homered for the Scrappers off starter Jason Creasy, the first home run given up by Spikes pitching this year.

-RODRIGUEZ GETS MOUND CALL FOR SPIKES: Left-hander Joely Rodriguez gets the start for State College tonight. Rodriguez is making his third start of the year, and went five innings against Mahoning Valley in his last outing on Sunday. The Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic native allowed three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two in a no-decision. On the year, Rodriguez has allowed lefties just a .214 average and leadoff hitters a .222 on-base percentage.

-SISCO TO START ON THE SLAB FOR SCRAPPERS: Right-hander Jake Sisco is slated to start for Mahoning Valley tonight. Sisco took the loss on Sunday against Rodriguez after giving up three runs, two earned, on two hits and four walks. The Merced (CA) College product also hit a batter and struck out three on Sunday. Sisco was drafted in the third round by the Indians in 2011.

-SPIKES MOUND STAFFERS START STRONG: Top Pirates pitching prospect Luis Heredia is currently just out of the top ten in the New York-Penn League in ERA after allowing just one earned run over his first nine innings in a Spikes uniform. Some Democrats are skipping national convention

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Some Democrats in tough races are returning their invitations to the Democratic National Convention with a note attached: Thanks, but no thanks.

Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri is the highest-profile Democrat to announce she'll skip the September shindig in Charlotte, N.C. At least 10 Democratic incumbents and front-running challengers will be no-shows, according to a count by The Associated Press.

All hail from conservative-leaning or toss-up states where President Barack Obama, whose speech accepting the party's presidential nomination will be the climax of the three-day convention, could be a drag on down-ballot Democrats.

Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., is out, his campaign said. So are Democratic Reps. Mark Critz of Pennsylvania and Jim Matheson of Utah. In West Virginia, where more than 40 percent of Democratic voters chose an incarcerated felon over Obama in the May primary, Sen. Joe Manchin and Rep. Nick Rahall will both steer clear of Charlotte.

Rep. John Barrow of Georgia, a top target of House Republicans, won't attend, his office confirmed. Neither will former Rep. Charlie Wilson, D-Ohio, who is fighting to reclaim the seat he lost in 2010.

"You're seeing it in swing states and also in areas that are home to Reagan Democrats, culturally conservative Democrats," said Saul Anuzis, a Republican strategist. "It's smart politics in swing areas for the Democrats to run away, but that also sends a signal to independent voters that maybe Obama isn't such a great idea."

Democrats and their aides insisted the decision has nothing to do with Obama or the economy and everything to do with timing.

"Would you go to North Carolina for a bunch of parties and glad-handing, or would you stay home and work as hard as you know how and convince Missourians they should rehire you?" McCaskill said Tuesday when she announced she wasn't attending the convention.

The convention falls barely two months before Election Day. Unless candidates can raise major cash at the convention, there is little to be gained from leaving their states and districts to hobnob with fellow Democrats. The start of the convention also coincides with Labor Day, when candidates traditionally hold major events back home.

Presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney's campaign on Wednesday dubbed the reluctant Democrats "defectors" and said they had jumped ship on the president. The Republican National Committee tied the no-shows to Obama's economic record, arguing that Democrats were seeking distance from promises left unkept.

"You know Team Obama has problems when some of Obama's biggest supporters don't want to be seen with the president as he's nominated to run for a second term," said RNC spokeswoman Kirsten Kukowski.

The risks of appearing too chummy with the president are all too real for McCaskill, who faces a difficult re-election fight in a state Obama lost in 2008. Crossroads GPS, a conservative outside group founded by Republican political operative Karl Rove, has already aired an attack ad dubbed "Obama-Claire" that uses images of the two Democrats together.

"A Democrat is a Democrat. You can't deny that you're a Democrat, just as the Republicans mostly don't deny that they're Republicans," said former Rep. Martin Frost, D-Texas, who chaired the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in the 1990s.

The committee's current chairman, Rep. Steve Israel, D-N.Y., said recently that candidates should make their own decisions about whether or not to attend. But Israel added that it makes complete sense for candidates to stay in their districts ? where they can interact with voters ? rather than leave town a few months before the election.

In the Senate, where Democrats can only lose four seats and still hold their majority if Obama is re-elected, the party's nominees for open seats in Arizona and North Dakota have both said they will campaign at home rather than fly to Charlotte. Both are states Obama lost in 2008.

Democrats aren't the only ones thinking twice about showing up for their party's big party. Former Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle, a Republican seeking a Senate seat in liberal-leaning Hawaii, said she won't attend the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla. The same holds true for Rep. Denny Rehberg, R-Mont., who is challenging Tester for his Senate seat.

When asked specifically whether NASA uses OpenStack at all any more, Cureton said:

Yes, absolutely. There are pilots going on at several centers. At Ames research center, I think there are two pilots, and there is at least one at Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. And there are a few others across the agency and I think that those pilots will probably bear fruit. It?s too early right now to know exactly what?s happening and how well it?s going, but I think they will see more activity as time goes on.

But, she again stressed that NASA will use whatever technology makes the most sense for any given project, whether it happens to be OpenStack or Amazon or Microsoft or whatever.

The only caveat there, I would say, is that these commercial providers are fiercely competitive and they are really putting a lot of energy and emphasis in their cloud offering. They are recognizing that the federal government is a very big customer and a very important customer, so they are not sitting back and letting things go by. I expect that some may go to OpenStack, maybe there are some features that come up in one of the other providers that might appear more attractive, but the beauty of this, I think, for our environment, is to have a cloud computing strategy for the agency that?s flexible, that is fiercely dedicated to the mission needs and not really sacrificing technology or technology preference for what the mission needs are.

In other words, NASA may have worked with Rackspace to launch OpenStack, but it will be ruthlessly pragmatic in its technology choices going forward.

When planning to clean up the yard around a home that has been neglected due to vacancy or foreclosure, it can often feel like you're taming the wild. The grass is high. The bushes are very thick and have no shape. Some may have broken branches or twines woven throughout. The weeds may be so tall that they have seeded and flowered. While it may seem like a tall chore to return the yard to a well manicured property, it can be done with the proper tools and some patience. The best way to tackle a large overgrown yard is to use one power tool at a time, moving either front to back or right to left, depending on the layout of the property. If the property has weathered a number of storms, there may be several different layers of debris. While many local governments are strictly enforcing the zoning ordinances for tall grass and yard maintenance, there are still properties that need extra attention due to long periods of unchecked growth.

Dress Appropriately Be prepared for wildlife. Insects, birds, small animals and snakes may have made their home on the property and may be plentiful. Power equipment may make grass, leaves and branches fly, so be sure to wear long sleeves, work gloves, long pants, steel toed-shoes, safety glasses and a hat.

Getting Prepared Gather together all of the necessary tools. Plan to use trash bags, a bruschcutter, lawn mower, weed eater, hedge trimmer and leaf blower. Depending on the property and its condition, a chain saw may also be necessary. Be sure that there is enough fuel of the proper mixture for each piece of lawn maintenance equipment. Walk through the property and clean up any debris, trash, bottles or items that could damage or be damaged by the mower or other equipment. Keep a covered bottle of cold water handy to stay hydrated in hot weather.

Weed Eater Weed eaters are a good starting point for any border areas. Walk along the sidewalk, driveway and fence lines. Circle trees, lampposts, gardens and any yard protrusions. Be watchful of any downed power lines or hidden objects.

High Grass If the grass is too high to tackle with a lawn mower, use a bruschcutter or a weed eater to first cut down the grass to a manageable height. If there is significant length to the clippings from the bruschcutter, use a leaf blower or a rake to remove the debris before mowing. If the grass is low enough, use a lawn mower to cut it to a comfortable height. The first cut should be left a little higher than normal, since the grass roots may be long and have not seen the sun for quite some time. This will help it to grow back and fill in green and healthy.

Shrubbery After the grass is a manageable height, the shrubs and trees should be trimmed. Begin by removing any damaged branches . Use a chain saw if necessary to make a clean cut of any dead branches or trees. Cut up the logs into smaller pieces for firewood or kindling. Trim all bushes into shape using hedge trimmers, moving from bottom to top. Take off small amounts at a time to avoid damage to the plant material and to ensure straight lines.

Once all of the trimming and cutting has been done for the first round, use a rake or leaf blower to clean up the debris. Compost or properly dispose of all yard waste.

Roll Up Your Sleeves, America; Let?s Get Back To Work

What happened to us, America? We built the strongest, most prosperous nation in the history of the world by being home to the hardest-working people in history. You used to hear so much about the American Work Ethic, about how people came to the United States, worked crazy-hard, built businesses and created opportunities for entire families and generations of new Americans. That work ethic now seems to be more a part of America?s history than a key feature of the nation today.

Today, labor unions have run amok, ?bargaining? for sweet-but-unsustainable deals for their memberships and driving otherwise-healthy enterprises into the ground. The very definition of ?hard work? has changed; many (not all) young people today think they?ve worked hard if they?ve been on the premises of their workplace for longer than six hours. They?ve slaved especially hard if they?ve been too busy to finish personal calls or get in all the smoke-breaks to which they feel entitled. A job is more like a possession today than a calling; it?s something you have, not something you do. A paycheck is an entitlement. And now, if your employer can no longer afford you, you get years of unemployment compensation from the big-government nanny state that?s more out-of-control than the unions.

When I was in my twenties, I expected to pay my dues (and I don?t mean union dues). If I wanted to have kids, I knew I?d better be prepared to work my tail off ? and I did. Hume?s Rule of Economics back then was that, since Mom stayed at home with the kids, Dad must work ?one job per kid.? For me, that meant four jobs ? two ?full time? (around forty hours a week) and two part-time jobs. Sleep was optional. Recreation was unheard-of.

These days, I?m proud to say that my kids are probably the hardest-working twenty-somethings around ? they all have jobs, and they all work harder than do their friends. And I wouldn?t wish the life I had in my twenties on them, or on anyone? but even the hardest-working among them don?t have the grindstone-marks on their noses that I bore for decades.

The nanny-state is the enabler of the general lazing of America? but a societal trend is the enabler of the state. That is the trend toward greater ?victimhood? than this country?s ever seen. There are two types of person out there, and in each of us: our self-entitled inner ?Victim,? and our self-reliant inner ?Entrepreneur.? Over the years, more people have been more dominated by their inner Victim than was ever the case before in America ? and the resulting societal sense of entitlement has grown so big as to threaten the fabric of our society and the foundation of our nation.

The ?progressive? movement by statists in America has helped feed this victimization trend. Statists have slowly taken over every major institution of influence in America, from the labor union to the news media and from the classroom to the movie theater. Taken together, these institutions form a powerful sort of ?brain ray? for the statists, and they use it to imprint their far-Left messages on people from an early age. Young people today feel entitled to a job, a good paycheck, and a pretty easy life. You?d expect the same things if you had been raised to believe you should.

The statists have vandalized the American Constitutional republic almost beyond recognition. America needs restoration, and that?s going to be a daunting project indeed. But the good news is that none of us has to restore America alone ? and, if each of us takes on our own little restoration project, we can still do it. The Entrepreneurs still outnumber the Victims in America, and it?s still a land of opportunity. We just have to roll up our sleeves and get to work ? real, hard work ? on our restoration projects.

What can you do? Can you start a business? Run for office? Support a campaign or petition drive? Donate to restorationist causes? Be a citizen journalist? Whatever you choose, start by choosing and nourishing your own better self ? your inner Entrepreneur ? and start by simply working harder. Life doesn?t have to be a drudgery ? but in America, we?ve partied for a while now, and it?s time to get back to work. The restoration of our country ? and of the engine for most of the world?s strength and prosperity ? depends on it.

Researchers deflate evidence for cold-blooded dinosaurs

Life stories written in mammal bones are being used to debunk a key argument for cold-bloodedness in dinosaurs.

Annual growth lines etched in the femurs of 115 wild warm-blooded mammals such as giraffes, reindeer and gazelles are similar to those previously seen in the bones of reptiles and dinosaurs, researchers report online June 27 in Nature.

?People always said that mammals do not show these lines,? says study lead author Meike K?hler, a paleontologist at the University of Barcelona in Spain. This assumption is ?like a myth that?s going around; you read it everywhere,? she says. ?But people haven?t really studied mammals.?

In dinosaurs and reptiles, yearly cycles of growth and nutrition are stamped in the bones like the rings of a tree. In fat months, animals pack on blood vessel-rich bone tissue, and in lean months they skimp, laying down only thin sheets. Under a microscope, the slender sheets of bone look like dark lines. Because these ?lines of arrested growth? or ?rest lines? stripe the bones of both dinosaurs and reptiles, some scientists assumed that dinosaurs, like reptiles, were cold-blooded. But the new work shows that warm-blooded mammals have banded bones, too.

Every mammal K?hler?s team examined showed cyclical growth: fast and furious when food was plentiful, slow and sluggish when resources were scant. What?s more, the rest lines from their specimens looked just like those seen in dinosaur fossils.

?It?s probably not going to close the debate whether dinosaurs were warm-blooded or not,? says paleontologist Martin Sander of the University of Bonn in Germany, ?but the argument that [rest lines] mean cold-blooded is certainly not valid any longer.?

K?hler?s team analyzed bone slices ? as thin as strands of human hair ? from 41 species of ruminants ? mammals with four-chambered stomachs ? and 23 different climate zones, from the polar tundra of Norway to the humid subtropics of South Africa. ?The sampling itself is amazing,? Sander says. The Institute of Zoology at the University of Hamburg donated most of the skeletal specimens from its Oboussier collection, a vast bunch of now-endangered and protected African animals gathered in the 1950s through the 1970s.

For example, a few years ago my family wanted to do a home exchange over the Christmas season with an American expat family living in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong family had already scheduled a holiday in Thailand, so their house was empty and available during the last two weeks of December.

I e-mailed the homeowner about the idea of a non-simultaneous exchange. She told me they wanted to visit to San Diego the following summer. So that?s what we did. My family visited their 3-story home overlooking the South China Sea in December 2006; their family visited our home overlooking the San Diego Bay in July 2007. Everybody got what they wanted!

Bottom line: This option works well if you?re eager to book an exchange in a particular city. It can be a scheduling challenge to move out of your home six months or a year later when payback time arrives, but perhaps it?s no big deal if you?re planning another trip anyway. If you want to vacation in a city with uber expensive hotel rooms, for example expect to pay about $335 per night in Paris, a non-simultaneous exchange would definitely be worth it.

3.? Hospitality Home Exchange:? This is when you stay in a member?s home while they are living there too. Sometime later, you return the favor and host them in your home.

I?ll admit, when I first heard about a ?hospitality? exchange, it seemed a bit strange. But after trying it a couple times, I found there are clear advantages. Your home swap partners can show you around their community and answer questions. You really feel like a local!

When we did a hospitality exchange in Germany, our hostess Monika baked us a delicious apricot cake; she delivered it to the 2-bedroom apartment they provided to us on the second floor of their home. Monika?s husband, Gerhard, was always helpful with mapping out our day trips.

Bottom line: Hospitality exchange is a good choice if you like getting to know your exchange partners and meeting their friends too. Before finalizing the exchange, be sure you understand the layout of the home so that you and your travel partners are comfortable with the living arrangement. Good communication leads to realistic expectations. This option is particularly beneficial if you?re traveling solo.

So there you have it, three home exchange choices: simultaneous, non-simultaneous and hospitality. All are good options.

Oil above $80 amid signs of improving US economy

SINGAPORE (AP) ? Oil hovered above $80 a barrel Thursday in Asia amid signs the U.S. economy, the world's largest crude consumer, may be improving.

Benchmark oil for August delivery was up 10 cents at $80.31 a barrel at late afternoon Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 85 cents to settle at $80.21 in New York on Wednesday.

In London, Brent crude for August delivery was down 40 cents at $93.10 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

On Wednesday, the U.S. said durable goods orders rose by 1.1 percent in May, reversing a two-month drop. Pending home sales also jumped in May.

Crude has plummeted from $106 early last month on expectations weak global economic growth will drag down oil demand. Some analysts expect crude to hover near $80 until U.S. demand picks up.

"This is the longest and slowest recovery from double digit unemployment ever" for the U.S., said Carl Larry of Oil Outlooks and Opinions. "Prices are going to be a fair value for producers and consumers around $80."

Investors will be eyeing a two-day European Union summit scheduled to start later Thursday. While most analysts don't expect E.U. leaders to announce a major policy initiative, traders will be closely watching for signs of progress toward a solution to the region's debt and economic woes.

Signs of a weakening Chinese economy have also dragged oil prices lower. Citigroup estimates China will account for about half of global oil consumption growth this year.

"While Europe concerns impact all asset markets, the slowdown in China is particularly daunting for commodities," Citigroup said in a report.

However, the recent drop in fuel costs should help Asian economies by easing inflation pressures and giving policymakers more room for fiscal and monetary stimulus measures.

"In general, cheaper oil is in itself a good thing for Asia," Capital Economics said in a report. "The trouble is that oil prices are falling because the global economy is getting weaker. This means that instead of pushing up Asian growth, lower oil prices will only cushion the downside."

In other energy trading, heating oil was down 1 cent at $2.58 per gallon while gasoline futures slid 0.6 cent at $2.49 per gallon. Natural gas added 2.9 cents at $2.83 per 1,000 cubic feet.
