Insight: Slovenia rues bank mismanagement as bailout talk grows

LJUBLJANA (Reuters) - When he took control of his country's biggest bank in 2009, Drasko Veselinovic expected a rough ride.

He knew Slovenia's state-owned Nova Ljubljanska Banka (NLB) was facing difficulty as the country's boom years began grinding to a halt.

But what he did not expect was the same politicians who berated him in public to be privately asking for secret favors.

Some "would strongly criticize me in the media", he told Reuters, "and on the very same day they would press one of my colleagues on the management board for a loan for a certain company".

In the years when Slovenia was booming, and the success of this tiny ex-Communist Alpine state was seen as little short of a miracle, NLB seemed to epitomize what had gone right.

Now, as Slovenia joins the list of euro zone countries facing a possible bailout, the bank's tale seems to sum up not only what went wrong here, but the toxic mix of politics and finance that has bedeviled the banking system across Europe.

NLB denies giving loans based on political connections.

Green and mountainous in its 8,000 square miles between Italy and Austria, Slovenia had been a trailblazer for the rest of the former Yugoslavia and eastern Europe.

When the country of 2 million people joined Europe's single currency in 2007, its economy was the union's fastest growing, driven by exports of Renault cars, household appliances and pharmaceuticals.

It even ran a balanced budget and was the envy of its fellow former Yugoslav republics, countries that, unlike Slovenia, had been stunted and scarred by ethnic conflict.

Tall and distinguished in wire-rimmed glasses, Veselinovic, 53, had run the Slovenian bourse until 2004, and rose to become Chief Executive Officer of NLB in early 2009, signing up to a five-year term.

But he resigned within three months, citing political interference. The state now owns 64 percent of NLB, up from 59 percent after a capital hike this month.

"The political pressure took various forms, but was always present," said Veselinovic.

"I had to leave because I didn't agree with some of the crazy ideas of politicians, which would have meant big problems for the bank even sooner than they actually came about."

Since his departure it has emerged that Slovenia's state-owned banks, NLB chief among them, are shackled with huge portfolios of bad loans that Slovenia's now-shrinking economy can ill afford to cover. These include 1.5 billion euros of loans at NLB that the country's finance minister said in July would probably not be repaid.

NLB told Reuters it had about 3 billion euros of poorly performing loans, but could not say how much would be repaid. Its plight has triggered speculation that Slovenia may become the sixth member of the 17-nation currency union to seek a bailout from its partners.

DENIAL

Accused of handing big loans to the politically connected with insufficient regard for risk, NLB has swallowed four capital injections totaling more than 1 billion euros since Slovenia joined the euro, the latest funded solely by the state when it provided 381 million euros in fresh capital this month.

Both the current government and opposition are trading blame for the crisis, accusing the other of political interference; most analysts say the blame should be shared.

"I never called any banker and told him to give someone a loan of 1 million or 10 million euros ... But there are people who have such power," Prime Minister Janez Jansa, of the ruling Slovenian Democratic Party, told television channel Kanal A last week, referring to a NLB loan for a project of an opposition-controlled city council.

Spokesmen for the two main opposition parties, Positive Slovenia and the Social Democrats, gave no immediate comment.

In a statement to Reuters, NLB rejected the accusation of favoritism.

"Political connection cannot be the basis for a loan. Loans are given based on checking the credit rating of the creditor, judging the project that is being financed and estimating the money flow that would ensure that the loan will be repaid," the company said.

Finance Minister Janez Sustersic says NLB may need another injection of up to 500 million euros ($613 billion) by the end of next year.

Local media reports say Slovenia's second and third-largest banks - state-owned Nova KBM and partially state-owned Abanka Vipa - might together need 150 million euros this year to cover bad loans.

Not a problem while the good times rolled, but Slovenia's 36 billion euro economy is now facing a renewed contraction of at least 0.9 percent this year, according to a government forecast, as demand for its exports in crisis-hit Europe wanes.

The budget gap reached 6.4 percent of economic output in 2011, more than double the EU's target ceiling.

The government strenuously denies needing a bailout for its ailing banks, for now. The markets are not so sure.

Slovenian five-year credit default swaps are up more than 200 percent on a year ago at 440 basis points, and the government was forced in April to shelve plans to issue a 1.5 billion euro sovereign bond because the yield demanded exceeded 5 percent.

The reluctance of successive Slovenian governments to sell the country's major assets, including its banks, is now coming back to haunt them.

The plight of NLB, Nova KBM and Abanka Vipa "provides the greatest proof of the damage done by state ownership and the links between the economy and politics", said economist Igor Masten.

Masten served for three years on the NLB's supervisory board, which is mostly state-appointed, but was dismissed in June as part of a changing of the guard when a new centre-right coalition came to power with its own ideas on how the bank should be run.

The three banks, which control more than 50 percent of the Slovenian banking market, now account for the lion's share of about 6 billion euros in bad loans, or 11.8 percent of all loans at the end of March. Most date back to the boom years of 2006-2008.

Both Masten and Veselinovic declined to name names or elaborate on the most egregious political meddling.

One case that has surfaced is that of Simona Dimic, who as an aide to then Prime Minister Borut Pahor in 2009 received a loan of 350,000 euros from NLB at a relatively low interest rate.

Slovenian media jumped on the sum and the favorable terms as evidence of favoritism, and Dimic later resigned citing media pressure, though she denied getting special treatment or other wrongdoing.

Citing national interest, Slovenia for years shunned suitors for its stakes in key enterprises but is now scrambling to sell off the banks.

RUSH TO PRIVATISE

The country's last big bank sales were back in 2001, when SKB was sold to France's Societe Generale, and in 2002 when Banka Koper was sold to Italy's Sanpaolo IMI. Both banks now operate profitably.

In 2002, Slovenia sold 34 percent of NLB to Belgian banking and insurance group KBC but later rebuffed KBC's efforts to take a majority stake.

KBC did not take part in NLB's capital hike this month, and its share in the bank is now 22 percent.

The government hopes that by reducing its majority stake in the two largest banks, NLB and Nova KBM, to 25 percent, it could drive down the interest it has to pay on its bonds. It also wants to create a state holding firm to take over bad loans in the state banking sector.

Analysts say it must also free up the labor market, raise the retirement age and improve the efficiency of the public health system if the economy is to really turn the corner.

"The situation in private banks is much better than in the banks owned by the state," Prime Minister Jansa told reporters this month.

"Keeping the banks in state hands would only lead to the constant need for capital hikes."

But buyers are hard to come by, particularly after successive governments blocked a number of major privatization deals.

Last year, the previous centre-left government blocked the sale of Slovenia's largest food retailer Mercator to its Croatian rival Agrokor, saying the deal would hurt the Slovenian food industry and the economy as a whole.

And in 2008, Jansa's then centre-right government rejected all bids for the national telecoms operator Telekom, saying they were too low.

"Slovenia rejected serious bidders several times, as in the cases of NLB, Mercator and Telekom, so it's no longer credible as a serious seller, and that's why it's even more difficult to find a buyer for NLB now," said Veselinovic.

NLB was one of 12 local lenders and firms that planned to sell their joint stake in Mercator when the government stopped the deal last year.

Having banked on about 100 million euros for NLB from the sale, CEO Bozo Jasovic quit. He remains in charge as the government seeks a successor.

"The political pressure around the sale of Mercator was quite open," said former NLB supervisory board member Masten.

"Ministers were writing to the (NLB) management demanding that they take into account the consequences for the Slovenian food industry and the economy."

Veselinovic, who now teaches at Ljubljana's Faculty of Economics, said Slovenia could still avoid a bailout, "but the price will again by paid by the taxpayers".

"Given that the price that could be reached for NLB is low, Slovenia will probably end up keeping the bank while all the bad loans of the past will be covered by the budget, which means by the taxpayers."

Austrian find dates bras back to 15th century

VIENNA (Reuters) - Four mediaeval bras have been found in a collection of textiles excavated from an Austrian castle, confounding conventional wisdom that bras did not exist before the 19th century.

The linen garments were found in the remains of Lengberg Castle in eastern Tyrol. They resemble modern bras in that they have two distinct cups, and have decorative needle lace that would not have been visible when worn under a dress.

The bras were among 2,700 textile fragments found during archaeological investigations of the castle by a team from the University of Innsbruck, which began in 2008.

Carbon dating has now confirmed that the garments date back to the 15th century, the researchers said.

Varying accounts exist of who invented the modern bra, but Sigmund Lindauer, who came from a German family of corset makers, patented an elastic version in 1913 and began mass producing the garments.

The metal shortages of World War Two helped hasten the demise of the corset.

Sports Medicine Helping Athletes to Recover From Injuries

Sports physiotherapy is important for any athlete because it addresses the root of the problem and hastens the recovery process. After the athlete is diagnosed and treated by a sports doctor, physiotherapy is usually the next step to help the player get back into the game. This rehabilitative programme is customised for individuals based on their injuries.

The most common sports injuries that are seen among athletes are joint and ankle sprains, hamstring pulls and Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tears. Most people who play contacts sports that involve running and turning with one foot are likely to get sprains and ligament problems.

Often, ice therapy and Interferential Current (IFC) therapy are administered by the sports physiotherapists to help reduce swelling and treat sprains. The physiotherapy sessions also involve soft tissue massages to relieve pain; joint manipulation or mobilisation for realignment; exercises to strengthen muscles; and programmes to rebuild core stamina endurance.

However, although the possibility of reconditioning the body back to the pre-injury level of fitness with regular and disciplined physiotherapy is about 90 per cent, it is dependent on several other factors ? level of injury, the player?s fitness level, weight and nutrition.

Many people have the misconception that you should not exercise after sustaining an injury but this is not true.

Not doing an appropriate amount of exercise will slow down the process of muscle recovery.

Though it is important to stay active despite the injury, this is a process which cannot be rushed. You have to be disciplined and patient during the physiotherapy process.

Being over eager will just make things worse and this is also the greatest challenge for sports physiotherapists working with enthusiastic and dedicated players.

Athletes are no strangers to sports-related injuries but even weekend ?sports warriors? need to careful to avoid hurting themselves. Non competitive players are often eager to play and they forget all about strength, flexibility and their fitness level. However, not having proper training will also mean you?re more likely to get injured if you don?t exercise with caution.

Mount Alvernia Hospital?s sports medicine department helps athletes and patients return to their sporting activities as soon as possible. Sports physiotherapists provide assessment and treatment in order to relieve pain,

maximize function and prevent further sporting injuries.

Sega Mega Drive Icons ToeJam & Earl Funking Onto Modern ...

Sega-Mega-Drive-Icons-ToeJam-And-Earl-Funking-Onto-Modern-Consoles-SoonToeJam & Earl is very much the marmite of Retro Gaming, you either love their 16-bit funkadelic antics or remain confused as to what the two decades of fuss has been about. Either way you'll soon be able to rekindle your love-hate relationship with the dynamic duo as they are set to jam their way onto modern consoles shortly.

The series has very much remained dormant since their second outing, ToeJam & Earl Panic on Funkotron, on the Sega Mega Drive in 1993. While the radical double did make a third appearance in 2002 on the Microsoft Xbox, most retro gamers tend to ignore this fabled release which failed to capture the charm of the pixelated past.

Similar to the recent Golden Axe and Streets of Rage revivals, the two ToeJam and Earl games are to be packaged up and distributed as downloadable games for Sega's ongoing Vintage Collection. Whilst no release date has been set, don't be too alarmed if your console's marketplace is suddenly hit with this radical addition.

Nuclear fuel rods removed from Japan's Fukushima plant

Operations commenced this week to remove nuclear fuel rods from a storage pool at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, some 16 months after the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl occurred at the Japanese site.

Plant operator TEPCO requested media outlets to refrain from filming the delicate and dangerous operations, but aerial images aired on TV and online showed cranes lifting two of the 1535 fuel units from the No 4 reactor building.

The procedure marked the first stage of a programme to remove unused and used fuel from the reactor to counter the risk of further radiation leakage. The process could take years.

Nuclear engineer Arnie Gundersen of Fairewinds Energy Education has long argued that structural weaknesses in the reactor building, which was severely damaged by an explosion in March 2011, could cause a large-scale catastrophe should another large quake strike the area.

Hiroaki Koide of Kyoto University's department of reactor safety management says that the biggest concern remains the sheer volume of fuel in the storage pools, which, if exposed to the air, would release vast amounts of radiation.

"The amount of caesium-137 in the fuel in the pools is equivalent to 5000 times the amount that was spread by the Hiroshima atomic bomb," says Koide. "The government has said that the amount of radioactivity released by the three affected reactors following [last year's disaster] was 168 times that of Hiroshima, so it is clear that we would be looking at a considerably worse outcome should the [reactor number 4] structure be compromised."

Delicate operation

The government used exactly such an outcome in its worse-case scenario analysis following the disasters. It concluded that residents in Greater Tokyo ? home to around 35 million people ? would need to be evacuated in the wake of such an outcome.

TEPCO has announced that repair work has sufficiently stabilised the structure. Koide is doubtful such operations could have been properly executed under the still high levels of radiation within the plant, but others are less sceptical.

"My understanding is that now they do have some redundancy in the cooling systems and have buttressed the fuel ponds themselves," said Malcolm Grimston, a nuclear researcher at Imperial College London. "So things are reasonably stable even against another earthquake, though obviously it depends upon where and how strong."

The first fuel units to be removed are among some 204 that had yet to be used. TEPCO says that these units pose little danger because unused fuel emits low levels of radiation. Operations to remove the 1331 more dangerous used fuel units will not be attempted until a much larger crane has been installed. This will be used to manoeuvre the 100-tonne metal casks that will be required to house the spent fuel units to ensure they are not exposed to the air, says Koide.

TEPCO, which declined to comment on the latest operations due to their "sensitive" nature, estimates that such operations will commence in December 2013, though Koide believes that is ambitious. "It's a process that carries with it an immense amount of danger," he says.

In other developments, a second nuclear reactor was taken back online at the Oi nuclear power plant in Fukui Prefecture. At the beginning of the month, another reactor at the Oi site became the first to be reactivated since the Fukushima disaster.

The Japanese government justified the move in the name of supplying sufficient energy in the steamy summer months. An estimated 170,000 people took to the streets of Tokyo to voice their disapproval of the move.

How I Beat MS: Tevia's Story | Better Off Well

Though I keep hearing the stories, I?m still blown away with amazement every time I hear another. Maybe it?s because I lived for so many years believing that illness was simply a matter of bad luck, age, and unfortunate genes.

People all over are taking control of their health by cleaning up their diets and removing toxins from their environments.

When our bodies are inflamed and full of free radicals, our cells weaken and sometimes die, leaving us susceptible to diseases like cancer, Alzheimer?s, heart disease, and, in Tevia?s case, Multiple Sclerosis.

While our genes may leave us predisposed to particular illnesses, the field of epigenetics continues to show that our futures are not pre-destined by them.

Here is Tevia?s story?

I was diagnosed with MS in February of 2005.

I?d been having vision problems as well as tingling and nerve pain in my left leg. The day I got the diagnosis, the neurologist gave me four pamphlets about injectable drugs, told me to go home and read them and decide which drug I wanted to go on.

She said they would schedule a rep to come to my home to show me how to administer the drug weekly- or daily- depending on the drug of choice. She also advised me to stop spinning (classes) as it would only make my symptoms worse.

From the moment I left her office, I knew I wasn?t even going to read about the drugs. After hearing her tell me they all have flu-like side effects after each injection, that was enough for me to know that there was no way in hell I would put that into my body.

A good friend of mine harped on me for several months about going vegan, as he was certain it would help.

At first, I stopped eating red meat, dairy, refined sugar and anything with high fructose corn syrup. Within a few weeks, I noticed a difference.

Within a month, my symptoms started to diminish. I was feeling so much more energy and my skin started to look better.

I still ate chicken and fish UNTIL I was stricken with food poisoning from chicken we ate at a restaurant. My partner also got sick, but she recovered in 24 hours.

It took me days to recover.

During that time, I started having nerve pain and was not feeling well. That was the turning point for me. I went 100% vegan and have never turned back.

Since going vegan in 2006, I have not had any symptoms of MS. Not one symptom.

As of 2010, I was told I am in remission.

I continue to spin 6 times a week at a high intensity. In fact, I teach classes at Up Dog Fitness in Santa Monica.

At 48 years old, I am in better shape than most 25 year olds.

People ask me often if I miss eating anything. I always say no because I?ve learned to cook great vegan meals and have mastered vegan baking to satisfy my sweet tooth.

I have never felt better or stronger and I know it is my diet.

I am mom to a beautiful, vegan 2 1/2 year old boy. My partner is carrying our second child, due in September.

I am beyond grateful that someone pointed me in the direction of a plant-based diet.

It has given me back my body.

Dazzling aurora appears over Antarctic station

The handful of wintertime residents at an isolated Antarctica research station recently got a break from austral winter's 24-hour darkness when a shimmering aurora blazed to life over their lonely outpost in the middle of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet.

A photograph snapped on Wednesday shows unearthly green curtains of light hovering above Concordia Station, a joint European research site run by the French Polar Institute and the Italian Antarctic Program, and one of the most hard-to-reach places on the planet.

The 13 people passing the winter there haven't seen the sun since it set for the final time in May, plunging the region into four months of darkness.

Auroras, called the northern lights or aurora borealis in the Northern Hemisphere and aurora australis in the Southern Hemisphere, appear when volleys of charged particles shot from the sun collide with particles in our own atmosphere. They occur largely at the higher latitudes because the Earth's magnetic field funnels the charged particles toward the poles.

Concordia Station is entirely cut off from the outside world during Antarctica's coldest months, when temperatures plunge to around minus 112 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 80 degrees Celsius) on the East Antarctic Ice Sheet. Aircraft can't take off in such frigid weather, and the last plane of the season left Concordia in February.

Station staff snapped pictures of the recent aurora seemingly suspended just above Concordia, which looks tiny beneath the shimmering green glow. Yet even the bright aurora can't conceal the blaze of the disc of the Milky Way, which shines brightly behind the dancing southern lights.

WRITERS URGED TO DO THINGS THAT BUY? TIME TO WRITE

By Beaven Tapureta

Shimmer Chinodya (above) and Chiedza Musengezi (below) were the main presenters at the ZWA Writers' Meeting on July 7, 2012

Chiedza Musengezi

Renowned and prolific novelist, poet, textbook and script writer Shimmer Chinodya has urged fellow writers to engage in writing activities that buy them time to write.

Speaking last week at a writers? meeting held at the British Council, Chinodya said he would not have made it had he concentrated on fiction only.

The award winning author stressed the importance of educational writing as another route to a successful writing life because it has power to shape the minds of students across the world.

Chinodya said textbook writing, which demands discipline and which he has successfully tackled over the past years, has helped him connect non-fiction and fiction and it paid off.

?I enjoy doing this. I feel I am educating millions of children,? he said.

Chinodya?s textbooks such as the Step Ahead: New Secondary School English Course English series in which he said he employs a literature-based approach are being studied by thousands of students across the SADC region.

The textbooks have been in schools since 1992.

?When you write textbooks, you are still a teacher, the supreme teacher and this is how I feel today,? the veteran educationist said.

Narrating how he became a writer, he said he was already writing poems when he was in Grade Five although he knew he was going to be a teacher and writer.

Chinodya said writing, during his teenage years, was like an act of self-empowerment or making up for a certain inferiority complex.

?I was small, skinny and shy,? he said.

In 1971, while doing Form One, he published his first work. From then onwards, he said he was drawn towards teaching although he was artistic.

The Two Tone magazine which published poetry by young writers at the then University of Rhodesia introduced him and other writers such as Dambudzo Marechera, Kizito Muchemwa and Stanley Nyamfukudza to the world of literature which he pursued through and through.

And still, the teacher inside him pushed him to take up a post-graduate teaching course.

Chinodya, who to date has written about 40 textbooks, said it is only these days that people look down upon the teaching profession.

?During our days we used to read around the world and this strengthened our literary background,? said Chinodya who however acknowledged that textbook writing in his time was easy as compared to today as there is now educational ideology has bee wiped away by turmoil in the last few years.

A clear educational ideology is important in every country, said Chinodya, as it guides textbook writers in understanding the culture and vision of the country they are writing for.

Chinodya said yes he has been hurt and disappointed but professionally he has led a happy life. No doubt this happy life has been an inspiration to other writers in Zimbabwe as well. He challenged writers to give themselves totally to writing.

Asked by fellow writer Aaron Chiundura Moyo how he has coped with drinking as a writer, Chinodya said now it?s better and he?s sobering up.

?At fifty, I am sobering up. But there?s a natural drunkenness in me. I love people, I love to talk,? he said.

Another well known writer and editor, Chiedza Musengezi, concurred with Chinodya on the need for writers to explore different kinds of writing.

?Explore and expand writing skills to cover several things such as places. Give ordinary things some value through writing,? she said.

Musengezi told writers that there are lots of writing genres apart from poems and stories, such as nature writing which involves writing about places.

?If we do not recognize places in our country no one will do it for us. Nature writing links us to our land. This genre is gaining importance in Europe,? said Musengezi.

As a woman writer, she said she is driven by the need to restore women?s voices in the public spheres.

She said for women to be taken seriously, they have to be discussed at the highest level and this is what she wants women voices to be because their experiences contribute to the nation?s history.

Musengezi, whose has published poems in Shona and stories in English, has been an editor for a long time and she said editing, which entails choosing a manuscript and editing it, is a huge responsibility and it is not a one-man show.

She said an editor bridges the gap when crucial texts are absent and this, she said, means that an editor has to ?create? a manuscript.

A founding member of Zimbabwe Women Writers, Musengezi showed writers publications which she co-edited such as Women Writing Africa The Southern Region (Feminist Press, New York, 2003), a project which dug up African female voices which had lain long in the archives dating back to 1904. 'A Tragedy of Lives: Women in Prison in Zimbabwe' (2003), another book she co-edited and published by Weaver Press, exposed experiences of women in the prisons of Zimbabwe. Musengezi also co-edited Women of Resilience: The Voices of Women Ex-Combatants (Zimbabwe Women Writers, Harare, 2000).

She also worked for the now defunct Baobab Books as editorial manager. Baobab Books published children's and young adults' literature and school textbooks.

In as much as local writing has developed over the years, she however condemned the unavailability of textbooks at tertiary level written by Zimbabweans.

?We must develop our own material for our students,? she said.

To refresh, writers took a short break of poetry with David Mungoshi rendering his favourite called An Old Song which he said is originally in Hebrew. Ndebele writer and poet Jerry Zondo did a closing poem that suited the purpose of the meeting called ?Vabhali?.

The meeting was the fourth of ZWA?s interactive bimonthly meetings which it is organizing under a common theme ?How I create?. The meetings are a platform for different artists to discuss how their creative processes work. However, the July 7 meeting was held under the topic ?Balancing Creative Writing and Textbook Writing? as it focused on writers who double as fiction and non-fiction authors.

ZWA Board Chair, Musaemura Zimunya, said apart from these meetings, his association is preparing for the Bulawayo and Mutare outreaches. ZWA?s Gweru outreach held few months ago went very well.

On another note, Zimunya encouraged writers to attend this year?s ZIBF Writers Workshop which will be held under the topic ?Beyond the Script?, saying this is an occasion for writers to engage publishers, editors, book reviewers, for they influence the way writers? products are received by the public.

SCRIPTWRITING: PART ONE

Just like molding pottery or carving a stone, scriptwriting is so much fun because you get to create a world of your own and add flesh to your own words. It involves hard work because you have to research on the subject matter you would have picked and it also requires your own thinking which reminds me that ?unless you say something of your own, you are not an artist!?. Basically, there are two types of scriptwriting, that is, one for the stage and another for the camera however, in this issue I will just look at the basics in scriptwriting.

Firstly, a script writer does not deal with a storyline or characters, but handles conflict. It can be defined as the fundamental struggle or imbalances involving ideologies, actions, personalities to mention but a few. Without conflict a story operates without structure and characters exist without purpose and dialogue is spoken without effect. So conflict addresses the ?what? of the story. For example, a writer must ask him/herself what the characters are fighting over in order to engage in story exploration. Thus conflict is very vital.

Characters are the people that live in the world of the story and they happen to be your creations. Although they are your own creations, they have to be realistic. A person?s character is made up of the three-dimensionality, that is, the physical, psychological and sociological attributes. These three affect and influence each other in such a way that a person?s character is made up. Hence in your creations these are some of the things that should be included.

It should be pointed out that the driving force in any given work or fiction is the dark shades which the script contains. These dark shades resemble the underlying story points that any given script works to reveal truth to an audience. Therefore, the art of writing is possessed within the art of withholding information. A writer must be able to manage the information that they give out in order to sustain the interests within the audience.

Moreover, the plot of the story is also vital in scriptwriting. The plot of the story is basically the arrangement of action designed to tell a story. A good plot is filled with dozens of actions, performed by characters with needs and wants and this creates the ?cause and effect? as the other characters will create further actions in their endeavors to overcome obstacles or create obstacles.

Dialogue is also crucial because this is what gets the characters going. So neat dialogue where characters wait for each other to finish speaking and exhaust a certain topic before moving to another is a no-no because in reality that is not what happens. Language also contains the rules of thinking so you have to be very cautious about your language/diction. Moreso, setting should not be forgotten as this prepares the mood for the action so one has to bear in mind the place of action.

Let?s meet in the next issue for the second part of this discussion. Should you have comments or contributions, do not hesitate to send them.

Exclusive Interview with Botswana's Leshie Lovesong

LESEGO NSWAHU NCHUNGA

aka ?LESHIE LOVESONG?

Lesego Nchunga (LN) is a 23 year old Motswana poet, born and raised in the city of Gaborone, but her clan is from Kavimba, a village in the Northern District of Chobe. Performance art has always been her passion, especially spoken word poetry. Below is an exclusive interview she had with The Regular Writer (TM).

TM:???? In 2007 you were regarded as the youngest talented poet to watch out for in the near future in Botswana, do you think you have kept that momentum?

LNN: ? I am no longer the ?youngest poet?. However I believe that my progress in the way I write and perform my poetry is reason enough to keep your eye on me. It is safe to say I have grown, and change comes daily. The most exciting thing about being a growing artist, and perhaps generally is the liberty or freedom to try out new things as often as possible.

TM: ??? ?In 2010, you took part in the SADC Poetry Festival, do you think these platforms are beneficial?

LNN:?? The SADC Poetry Festival introduced me to people within the region who have made their passion a movement. People who do not just perform, or create and display their artwork, but most who make a livelihood out of it. I was encouraged to believe that there is life in the art after all. In fact, the greatest gift I got from the Festival was the eye opener that collaborations in art don?t necessarily have to be limited to the groups from which the art forms fare. That a form of vocal art can be paired with a form of visual art to produce an extraordinary artful fusion was an experience I wish to share with other artists. It?s like a meeting of two senses. What you hear reflecting what you see!!!

TM: ??? What's the latest that has happened to you afetr the SADC Poetry Festival that you want to share with reader?

LNN:?? Since 2010, besides corporate performances, I have traveled to Luanda,? Angola and Rundu, Namibia, primarily as an actress, but I got the opportunity to enhance the scripts from which we were acting by incorporating poetry in them. In both places, I performed the poetry accompanied by theatrics enacted by other performances. I have since explored the magnificence of collaboration of different art forms.

TM:???? Have you produced anything so far like an album?

LNN:?? I have not yet produced any albums on my own. I have however taken part in production of two audio anthologies called Dreaming Is A Gift For Me and Awakening. The first is a non-musical poetry anthology produced under SAUTI Arts and Performance Management, and it showcases twelve Batswana poets. The latter is a collection of six feel good poems, which can also be called ?Affirmations?, the main idea being to heighten the perceptions we have of ourselves and our actions daily, in an effort to send out positivity, under the themes of Relationships, Health, Wealth, and others.

TM:???? How is poetry appreciated in Botswana?

LNN:?? The appreciation for poetry is growing and changing in Botswana. Initially, it was more for the individual art lovers. However with the emergence of more poetry groups around, organizations have been forced to pay attention and this has elevated the poetry industry to a level, almost close to that of the music industry.

TM:???? What do you think makes you different from other poets?

LNN: ? We all have very different stories to tell. And even where our stories overlap, the way we tell them are different. I am an abstract speaker, in my narrations. Others are storytellers. You will know my performance by not just my voice, but my use of grammar, intonation and phrasing, which is different from most other poets in Botswana. Also, and most distinctly, you will very rarely see me on stage without hearing me heavily accessorize my poetry with singing. I am both a singer, and poet, and I feel together, the combination sets me apart.

TM:???????????????? What do you think about poetry in Botswana and Africa as the whole?

LNN:?? I think there is a continued uprising in poetry as an art form. We are becoming aggressive in taking our stage. That will definitely immortalize poetry. We are distinguishing ourselves from other forms of performance arts. Eventually, more poets will be able to live off the craft.

TM:???? Who is your inspiration?

LNN:?? Internationally, I love the work of Sarah Kay. The complaint people usually have about poetry is that it sounds complicated, and it?s not easy enough to understand. Her work is simple, humourous and tells stories which are fun. She is young, and she speaks of things close to her heart. For that reason, I am drawn to her. Also, I love Ezekiel from the PFCM group! His work is intense and challenging, spiritually. Locally, Mandisa Mabuthoe?s work reminds me of Laura Beuke?s book Zoo City. Abstract work pushes the mental boundaries and inclines you to think out of the box! In fact to throw the box away! The work of TJ Dema also appeals to me. She is a story teller, and she has carved out a path for not only herself but many others who will come after her. The young poets in the industry in Botswana are also inspiring. Their tireless pursuit of ?the word? even if it means sitting out in the rain on an Tuesday evening, at a local caf?, just so they hear what the mic has for them is moving, to say the least.

Outside the poetry industry, I read a lot of African literature, which also plays a big part in my artwork. The works of Ngozi Chimamanda Adichie, Kopano Matlwa, Wame Molefhe, and Pentina Gappah are some of those which have inspired my work in many ways.

TM:???? What issues do you discuss in your poetry?

LNN:?? For the longest time, I did what I call entertainment poetry. I wasn?t really addressing any issues directly or intentionally. Occasionally, I would write about social ills and degradation or of women in society. Recently however, I encountered nature as a person, and she stole my heart. I was struck by the realization that as human beings, we have become so consumed in ourselves, and bettering our own interests, that we ignore our surroundings, and the other species which exists around us, in so far as it is convenient for us. For as long as we do this, our lives will continue to depreciate in substance and in value. If we don?t respect nature and the other beings which co-exist with us on earth, they too will rebel against us. There?s enough space for each of us to be, without further deteriorating the little that is left. Being selfish is what has ended us up with a tattered ozone layer, and a handful of rhinos left. How much more do we honestly want to destroy until we finally wake up to the reality that what is important is a compromise, and quite frankly, for too long, humans have been taking, taking, taking and not giving back a fraction of what we have taken. So this has become a prominent theme in my poetry lately. The appreciation of other beings.

TM:???? Does your family appreciate your performing career?

LNN:?? My family is VERY supportive of my career as a performer. Although I am a lawyer by profession, it is obvious that art is my first love. My parents have never discouraged me from anything performance art related. Their guidance has always been in the direction of my treasures. I was raised to harness, hone and explore my talents, especially in the arts. In fact, if you ask my mother, she will tell you that she believes I should have already published my first book by now. She knew I was an artist before even I did. So it is easier for me to be an artist with their support.

?

TM:???? What else would you want to tell the readers and all your followers out there??
LNN:?? I would like everyone to keep the art alive. It?s up to each of us support this industry. Your support is truly meaningful; whether it is buying a CD instead of writing it, funding, or even being an audience member and admirer, you make the difference. Eventually, with our combined efforts, we will make the performance industry a prominent industry.

As far as Leshie Lovesong is concerned, before the lapse of 18months, I will certainly deliver an offering. Thank you very much for the encouragement and keep believing in us poets.

ZWA BULAWAYO BOUND

The Zimbabwe Writers Association (ZWA) is having an outreach meeting in Bulawayo on Saturday 21July, 2012 at the Bulawayo Art Gallery at 09:00 - 12:00. Leaders of writers associations and individual writers who may or may not necessarily belong to literary associations around Bulawayo are all invited to this get-together.

Our outreach would take the shape of introductions of associations and individual writers,?followed by an open exchange of problems, challenges, ideas etc as the basis of consultation. On our part, we shall introduce the idea of ZWA and its constitution to Bulawayo and what we have managed to achieve thus far and how beneficial it has been to writers. In other words, it is really an open ended occasion.
