NFL notes: Rodgers says he was ?lied to? by Braun

NFL notes ? Green Bay QB ?disappointed? by friend?s PED admission.

Ryan Braun apparently has some work to do to repair his friendship with Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Describing himself as shocked and disappointed, Rodgers said Friday after the Packers? first training camp practice that Braun "looked at me in the eye on multiple occasions and repeatedly denied the allegations" that the Milwaukee Brewers slugger was using performance-enhancing drugs.

Braun this week accepted a season-ending 65-game suspension after admitting to violating baseball?s rules against using PEDs.

Rodgers felt duped by his buddy and business associate, a sentiment being expressed by many others in Wisconsin. A Milwaukee restaurant is named for two of the state?s most well-known athletes, and Rodgers last year defended his friend on Twitter, going so far as to bet his multimillion-dollar salary that Braun was clean.

"It?s disappointing, not only for myself as a friend but for obviously Wisconsin sports fans, Brewer fans, Major League Baseball fans," Rodgers said before a throng of media surrounding his locker. "It doesn?t feel great being lied to like that, and I?m disappointed about the way it all went down."

Rodgers and Braun have spoken since the slugger?s suspension. Asked if he considered themselves friends, Rodgers didn?t answer directly but said in part, "I trusted him, and that?s the thing that probably hurts the most."

Vikings? Peterson eager for HGH testing

Embracing the challenge has always been a part of Adrian Peterson?s persona. Bring it on, the star running back has often said with a smile.

He set the NFL?s single-game rushing record as a rookie for the Minnesota Vikings. His swift recovery from reconstructive left knee surgery last season included a jaw-dropping 2,097 yards rushing and the league MVP award. No matter how rare the feat he?s asked about, Peterson will usually insist it?s possible.

story continues below

There?s another test he?d eagerly take: for human growth hormone.

"I can?t wait until they draw my blood," Peterson said Friday after the team?s first workout of training camp.

The NFL and the players union have been working on an agreement for HGH testing procedures. Supplemental HGH is a banned substance that?s difficult to detect. It?s been used by athletes for what are believed to be a variety of benefits, whether real or only perceived, like increased speed and improved vision.

"To be honest with you, I?ve been hoping they did this a long time ago, you know, evening out the playing field and make guys be honest and truthful to themselves," Peterson said, later adding: "I?m all natural. I work hard. This right here, it?s a test for me personally, that I know that, ?Hey, I?m clean as a whistle,? and other guys as well. And then, like I say, it?ll bring some guys to the forefront and be like, ?Hey, I guess this is how this guy?s been performing so well.?"

Peterson said he believes HGH use is not uncommon around the league.

"You?ve got guys out there trying to provide for their families, they?re going to try to get that edge, get that advantage, especially if they?re not worried about trying to get caught," Peterson said. "Yeah, it?s being used."

Around the league

Bengals ? An MRI found that All-Pro receiver A.J. Green has a bruised knee that will force him to miss several days of practice. Green hurt his left knee near the end of Cincinnati?s first practice of training camp on Thursday. Green said an MRI that found no structural damage.

Shrien Dewani awaits ruling on bid to fight extradition to South Africa

Shrien Dewani and Anni Dewani

Shrien Dewani will discover on Wednesday whether his latest bid to delay his extradition to South Africa to face trial over his wife's death has succeeded.

The 33-year-old is suspected of ordering the killing of his new wife Anni, 28, who was shot as the couple travelled in a taxi on the outskirts of Cape Town in November 2010.

On Wednesday at Westminster magistrates court, chief magistrate Howard Riddle is expected to reveal his latest decision as to whether Dewani should be extradited.

The businessman has been receiving treatment for depression and post-traumatic stress disorder at psychiatric hospitals near Bristol since his wife's death.

Prosecutors claim it would not be "oppressive" to extradite the businessman to face trial, and that there has been a "significant and sustained improvement" in his mental health in recent months.

Hugo Keith QC, for the South African government, admitted Dewani was not fit to plead, but argued that this should not stop the extradition process.

However, Dewani's defence team has argued that the decision should be delayed for six months to avoid his condition worsening.

During a full extradition hearing earlier this month, Professor Nigel Eastman said: "If he goes now, he will be in a poorer state than if he goes in six months' time. If he goes to South Africa and does not improve, he is at risk of being chronically ill and chronically unfit to plead."

It emerged during the four-day hearing that while resident at Fromeside and Blaise View mental health units Dewani was allowed to walk home every day, and a camper van was set up in the grounds where he would spend long periods of time.

Riddle ruled in 2011 that Dewani should be sent back to South Africa, but an appeal against the decision was successful and he was ordered to look again at the case.

So far three men have been convicted over Mrs Dewani's death.

Last year, South African Xolile Mngeni was convicted of premeditated murder for shooting her. Prosecutors claimed he was a hitman hired by Dewani to kill his wife, which Dewani has consistently denied.

Taxi driver Zola Tongo was jailed for 18 years after he admitted his part in the killing, and another accomplice, Mziwamadoda Qwabe, also pleaded guilty to murder and was given a 25-year prison sentence.

The family of Mrs Dewani will be at the court hearing on Wednesday, her sister Amy Hindocha has said.

She told ITV's DayBreak programme that her brother Anish and her parents had travelled to London from their home in Sweden to see the latest court appearance.

Speaking of her father, who has been to every court hearing in England and South Africa, she said: "He just wants to know what happened, it's a desire that has taken time away from everything else."

Anish Hindocha said: "We hope for the best outcome today. I can somehow see a light where we will get answers."

'Alarming' rise in children injured by falling TVs

CHICAGO (AP) ? Falling televisions sent nearly 200,000 U.S. children to the emergency room over 20 years and the injury rate has climbed substantially for these sometimes deadly accidents, a study found.

Doctors and safety experts say better awareness is needed about the dangers ? especially the risks of putting heavier, older model TV sets on top of dressers and other furniture young children may try to climb on.

Most injuries are in kids under 5; head and neck injuries including concussions are the most common.

"This is a problem that is increasing at an alarming rate," said lead author Dr. Gary Smith, a pediatric emergency specialist and president of the Child Injury Prevention Alliance in Columbus, Ohio.

Smith said it is unclear from the data what type of TV sets are involved in the accidents or whether older, heavier models are the most common culprit.

The study was published online Monday in the journal Pediatrics.

In 2011, 12,300 children nationwide got ER treatment for TV-related injuries, compared with 5,455 in 1990. The injury rate nearly doubled, from 0.85 injuries per 10,000 children aged 17 and younger in 1990 to 1.66 per 10,000 in 2011, the study found.

The researchers examined national ER data on non-fatal television-related injuries to kids from 1990-2011. In many cases, the set had been placed on a dresser and the child used open drawers as stairs to climb up and reach the TV, toppling it.

Over those two decades, 215 children died from these injuries, government data show, and news reports indicate that since January 2012, at least six young children have been killed nationwide by falling TVs.

Scott Wolfson, spokesman for the government's Consumer Product Safety Commission, said as flat screen TVs have become more popular, many families move heavier old TVs to bedrooms, placing them on dressers or other unsteady furniture not designed to hold them.

The commission urges parents to anchor furniture to the wall or floor with brackets or other specially designed tethers. TVs also should be anchored to sturdy surfaces, the commission recommends.

Thousands take to streets to protest Trayvon Martin verdict

By Edward Upright and Zachary Faginson

NEW YORK/MIAMI (Reuters) - Demonstrators took to the streets in dozens of U.S. cities on Saturday to vent their anger over the acquittal in Florida of the man who shot unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin to death and to call for federal charges in the racially tinged case.

Hundreds marched in the summer heat to rally at federal courthouses in Miami, Chicago, Los Angeles and other cities, demanding "justice for Trayvon" and an end to racial profiling that they said was at the heart of the case.

The rallies came one week after a Seminole County, Florida, jury returned verdicts finding 29-year-old George Zimmerman not guilty of second-degree murder and manslaughter in the February 2012 death of Martin.

Critics contend Zimmerman, who is white and Hispanic, wrongly suspected Martin, 17, of being a criminal because he was black. The neighborhood watch volunteer called police to report Martin, then left his car with a loaded handgun concealed in his waistband.

A fight ensued in which Zimmerman suffered a bloody nose and head injuries before he shot Martin once in the heart.

In New York, scene of one of the largest rallies, roughly 2,000 protesters, some carrying "Boycott Florida" signs or wearing T-shirts with Martin's picture, were led by an emotional Sybrina Fulton, the slain teenager's mother.

"Trayvon was a child," she said. "I think sometimes it gets lost in the shuffle because as I sat in the courtroom, it made me think they were talking about another man. And it wasn't. It was a child."

Fulton burst into tears as members of the crowd shouted: "We love you!"

JAY Z, BEYONCE

She was joined at the event by hip-hop mogul Jay Z and his wife, pop star Beyonce, along with New York City mayoral candidate Christine Quinn and civil rights activist Al Sharpton.

Sharpton, who helped organize the nationwide rallies and who led the crowd in repeated chants of "no justice, no peace" and "I am Trayvon Martin," said the celebrity couple didn't want to speak at the rally but wanted to stand with Martin's family.

Civil rights leaders had voiced hopes for peaceful protests after outbreaks of violence that earlier this week led to arrests in Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay area.

Sharpton has said he hopes continued public pressure will force the U.S. Department of Justice to bring federal civil rights charges against Zimmerman.

Federal prosecutors say they are investigating whether Zimmerman violated civil rights laws. But lawyers have said they think new charges are unlikely.

At the White House on Friday, President Barack Obama sided with those who say the shooting need not have happened, expressing sympathy to the Martin family. He said the case was properly handled by the court in Florida but questioned "stand your ground" laws that have been adopted in 30 states.

Although Florida's stand your ground law was not cited by Zimmerman's defense team, the jury was instructed that under the state's 2005 statute he had the right to use deadly force if he reasonably believed it was necessary to do so in self-defense.

Following the main event in New York some 800 people made a boisterous but peaceful procession over the Brooklyn Bridge, pausing outside the federal courthouse in Brooklyn before moving on.

'NO JUSTICE, NO PEACE'

Elsewhere, about 2,000 people endured a downpour in Atlanta to hear speakers talk of the need for justice for Trayvon Martin and other black youths.

The Trayvon Martin Prayer Vigil and Rally, in downtown, began with chants of "no justice, no peace," and "Trayvon, Trayvon, Trayvon" before speakers urged the crowd to register to vote and to seek repeal of Georgia's stand your ground law.

Martin Luther King III urged the audience to go to Washington, D.C., on August 24 for the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington and his father's famous "I Have a Dream" speech. "It's marching time, ladies and gentlemen," he said.

At least several people in the crowd were treated for heat-related illness after fainting on the sweltering day.

At a rally in Miami, Martin's father, Tracy, told supporters that after the acquittal he has "come to realize George Zimmerman wasn't on trial - Trayvon was on trial."

In Los Angeles, about 500 people converged on the federal courthouse in Los Angeles under gray skies, toting signs saying "Open Season on the Black Man" and "This Should Not Be OK in 2013 America."

In Chicago, some 500 people rallied across from the Everett McKinley Dirksen federal courthouse.

"We are standing up here today to say to our young people, 'we value your lives,'" said Chicago Urban League Chief Executive Officer Andrea Zopp, who has a 17-year-old son. "The civil rights movement is not over."

Rapper MC Lyte told the crowd: "When the verdict was read, I felt like we lost Trayvon Martin all over again."

In Oakland, a crowd of up to 150 people demonstrated peacefully in the city's downtown, occasionally singing "We Shall Overcome" before dispersing in the late afternoon.

And across the bay in San Francisco, about 100 people gathered in front of the Federal Building.

Reverend Arnold Townsend, 70, vice president of the local NAACP chapter, vowed to "bring to light this incident (and) let black children know the system has them under attack."

Six Flags Texas Giant roller coaster closed after woman's death

Photo credit: AP | This aerial photo shows The Texas Giant roller coaster ride which sits idle at the Six Flags Over Texas park Saturday in Arlington, Texas. Investigators will try to determine if a woman who died while riding the roller coaster at the amusement park Friday night fell from the ride after some witnesses said she wasn't properly secured. (July 20, 2013)

ARLINGTON, Texas - An Arlington police sergeant says a woman who died while riding a roller coaster at a Six Flags amusement park in North Texas fell from the ride.

Sgt. Christopher Cook told The Associated Press on Saturday that police believe the woman fell Friday at Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington, and that there appears to have been no foul play.

He says police, fire and emergency medical services responded to the park around 6:45 p.m. Friday in reference to a woman who had fallen from a train car while riding a roller coaster. He says she was pronounced dead at the scene.

She had been riding the Texas Giant. Dubbed the tallest steel-hybrid coaster in the world, it reaches 14 stories high, drops 79 degrees and banks 95 degrees. Witnesses told area media outlets the woman fell.

Carmen Brown told The Dallas Morning News that she was waiting in line to get on the ride when the accident happened and witnessed the woman being strapped in.

"She goes up like this. Then when it drops to come down, that's when it (the safety bar) released and she just tumbled," Brown, of Arlington, told the newspaper. "They didn't secure her right. One of the employees from the park ? one of the ladies ? she asked her to click her more than once, and they were like, 'As long you heard it click, you're OK.' Everybody else is like, 'Click, click, click.'

"Hers only clicked once. Hers was the only one that went down once, and she didn't feel safe, but they let her still get on the ride," Brown said.

Six Flags said the ride will be closed as the investigation continues, and a concert scheduled for Saturday was canceled.

The Texas Giant can carry up to 24 riders. It first opened in 1990 as an all-wooden coaster but underwent a $10 million renovation to install steel-hybrid rails and reopened in 2011.

When the car that the woman had been riding in returned to the loading zone, two people got out and were visibly upset, Rockwell resident John Putman told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

"They were screaming, 'My mom! My mom! Let us out, we need to go get her!" Putman told the newspaper.

Also Friday, an Ohio amusement park's thrill ride malfunctioned when a boat accidentally rolled backward down a hill and flipped over in water, injuring all seven people on it. Operators stopped the Shoot the Rapids water ride after the accident, said officials with Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio.

Six Flags Over Texas opened in 1961 and was the first amusement park in the Six Flags system. It is 17 miles west of downtown Dallas. The park's first fatality happened in 1999. A 28-year-old Arkansas woman drowned and 10 other passengers were injured when a raft-like boat on the Roaring Rapids ride overturned in 2 to 3 feet of water.

There were 1,204 ride-related injuries reported in the United States in 2011 ? about 4.3 for every million visitors ? according to the National Safety Council's most recent data. Of those, 61 were deemed serious, the March 2013 report said, and roller coasters accounted for 405 injuries.

Fatalities were not listed in the report, which was prepared for Alexandria, Va.-based International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions. Also, only 144 of the 383 amusement facilities with rides in the United States responded to the survey.

A 2005 report to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimated just over four people died annually on amusement rides from 1987 to 2002. The estimate includes both mobile amusement park rides and fixed-site rides.

New Iran president expected to tap US-educated advisers, bringing 'worldly outlook' to Tehran

Iran's president elect Hassan Rowhani waves during his first press conference on June 17.

By Alastair Jamieson, Staff writer, NBC News

Several U.S.-educated Iranians are expected to be tapped for key posts in President Hassan Rowhani's new administration, hinting at a break from the antagonistic rhetoric of predecessor Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.?

The 64-year-old moderate cleric won an outright victory in June?s election, in which he was the closest thing to a reform candidate running to replace Ahmadinejad.

A sudden thaw in relations with the West is unlikely, most experts agree. But Rowhani's installation could mark the beginning of a more open government and lead to friendlier relations between Washington and Tehran.

?I would not expect a change of agenda, but maybe a change in the way things are done ? and that is important when it comes to diplomacy,? said Sasan Aghlani, an expert on Iran at British think tank Chatham House.

After Rowhani is sworn in on August 3rd, he will unveil a new cabinet and team of advisers. Among the names being touted are four veteran Iranian politicians who all hold degrees from U.S. universities.

Mahmoud Vaezi, a senior figure at Rowhani?s Center for Strategic Research think tank, could be appointed foreign minister, according to Bijan Khajehpour, a Vienna-based Iranian business consultant and contributor to regional news site Al-Monitor.

Vaezi graduated with a degree in electrical engineering at California?s Sacramento State University in 1976, and his biography lists two other U.S. degrees and a doctorate from Warsaw University in Poland.

A page from the 1968 edition of "El Rodeo", the California Polytechnic State yearbook, shows the college's Muslim Students Club. Mohammad Reza Nematzadeh graduated from the university in 1968, and the yearbook photo includes a student with the same name (circled).

Mohammad Reza Nematzadeh in 2005, when he was Iran's deputy oil minister.

Other candidates for administration positions are industrialist Mohammad Nahavandian, who was awarded a doctorate in economics by the George Washington University?in January 1994, and Mohammadreza Nematzadeh, Rowhani?s campaign manager who studied environmental engineering at California Polytechnic State University in 1968.?

Seyed Hossein Mousavian, likely to be a key foreign policy adviser, is another Sacramento State graduate - and currently a research scholar at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, Princeton University.

That senior Iranian figures are educated in the West is not unusual. One of the candidates Rowhani defeated, Ali Akbar Velyati, was a post-graduate fellow at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine while current foreign minister Ali-Akhbar Salehi has a doctorate from MIT.

But together, they come from a cohort of Iranians who were studying in the United States just before the 1979 Islamic revolution and returned to Iran to participate in overthrowing the U.S.-backed Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. And all four of those touted for Rowhani?s inner circle have extensive business or political ties outside their home country.

?I sense the cabinet will have a more worldly outlook than under Ahmadinejad,? Chatham House's Aghlani said.?

Most have already served as ministers under previous presidents, according to Khajehpour. ?They bring experience, which is significant because there has been too much trial and error in the past."

Reuters, file

Mohammad Nahavandian, left, and Hossein Mousavian are among those tipped for posts in Iran's new cabinet.

?They also have an insight into how Iran is perceived in the West, and how the West is perceived in Iran.?

Ahmadinejad has taken a confrontational approach with the West, going as far as calling for Israel to be wiped off of the map, as well as alienating members of Iran's conservative establishment.

Rowhani himself was educated in the West, having been awarded both a masters degree and a doctorate in law at Scotland's Glasgow Caledonian University, where his supervisor Mahdi Zahraa remembered him as ?a quiet-spoken, very gentle man.?

"His spoken English was good. Hassan knew his subject well and responded to my directions in an organised, thoughtful manner,? Zahraa said in a statement.

The university on Wednesday released video footage of the 1999 ceremony at which Rowhani received his doctorate.

As he prepares to take office, Rowhani is likely to be preoccupied with the tasks ahead of him ? not least repairing Iran?s economy, which has been crippled by United Nations sanctions.

Last Sunday, Rowhani revealed the country?s financial situation is more perilous than Ahmadinejad had led people to believe, with inflation at 42 percent. The admission appeared to hint that Iranians can expect more transparency from a Rowhani government ? even if relief from spiraling prices for everyday goods is not on the immediate horizon.

He has also called for less filtering of the Internet ? a recognition that Iran?s Islamic principles cannot solely be maintained by sealing itself off from the outside world. "Gone are the days when a wall could be built around the country,? he said in remarks reported on state-run Press TV. ?Today there are no more walls."

Khajehpour speculated that Rowhani would create "a government of unity ? of reconciliation, perhaps." He speculated that even defeated election rival Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf could be offered a government role.

Still, Rowhani?s open approach ? and strong regional outlook - could cement opposition among ordinary Iranians to U.S.-led sanctions.

?A civil society could emerge, bringing together previously fragmented groups who could mount a campaign against sanctions.?

In a hint at what lies ahead, Mousavian ? one of the names tipped for a foreign policy role ? said in an interview Monday that Washington?s sanctions policy was a ?lose-lose game.?

He said: ?[Rowhani] is courteous and logical and respects international norms and regulations. The key to resolving the dispute with Iran depends on whether the traditional Western policies of pressure, sanctions, threats and humiliating Iran will change to those based on respect, mutual interests and cooperation with Rowhani?s administration.?

'Dangerous' heat, then severe storms

/

With summer in full swing, people are heading outdoors to soak up the sun or doing their best to stay cool

By Henry Austin and Matthew DeLuca, NBC News

A blistering heat wave that has sent temperatures soaring across the country this week seemed likely to come to stormy end, even as highs approached 100 in New York on Friday.

Forecasters said that temperatures in the high 90s were expected in Boston and Philadelphia as well, with the heat index ? the ?feels like? effect fed by humidity ? pushing 110.

?The cities have excessive heat warnings in effect? Some people don?t have air conditioning, so that?s going to be an issue especially for the elderly and younger children as well," said Michael Palmer, meteorologist at the?Weather Channel. "We could see a few records in spots.

He said of the conditions, "They are dangerous."

Relief is in sight, with cool breezes from the north expected to blast the dome of high pressure which parked itself over the Ohio Valley, causing the near-record highs. ?

But the break will come at a price as severe thunderstorms and hail sweep in late on Friday. The National Weather Service said the storms could break over areas of the Midwest, Great Lakes region, New York state and parts of New England on Friday afternoon and into the evening, bringing strong winds.

?We?ll see a line of storms that will produce some winds that could gust at least 60 mph, we could see some golf ball-size hail in spots,? said Palmer.

The worst of the storms, including damaging straight-line winds, hail, and perhaps a tornado, will come in Michigan, eastern Wisconsin, northeast Illinois, far northern Indiana and Upstate New York. ?

Temperatures at Newark Liberty Airport in New Jersey were recorded at 98 degrees at 1 p.m. local time on Friday, as the mercury hit 93 in Central Park. John F. Kennedy Airport in Queens, New York, recorded temperatures of 100 degrees on Thursday, beating out the previous record set for that date a year ago, and on Friday the heat index there reached 108.

Electricity usage soared to an all-time high in New York City as the work week closed out, provider Con Edison announced, as service hit a peak of 13,214 megawatts around 2 p.m. local time. The previous record was 13,189 megawatts on July 22, 2011, according to the company.

Even inside, some people could not find relief.

?It?s too hot,? Jamal Al-Onofi, a store owner in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, told NBC New York. ?It?s crazy in here, it feels like more than 100 degrees.?

Elsewhere in the sweat-stained metropolis, workers at a New York McDonald?s walked off the job after the air-conditioning went out for several hours and one employee fainted, according to NBC New York. Paramedics responded to a call for an unconscious person at the fast-food joint, the fire department confirmed.

The extreme heat has already claimed the life of a 57-year-old man in Philadelphia, city officials told NBC Philadelphia there. Authorities say the man, who had an air conditioner that was not operating, died from chronic obstructive lung disease and heat exposure. Temperatures reached 98 in Philadelphia on Thursday; the heat index was 106.

Christopher J. Todd, 30, of Rochester, N.Y., also died while hiking in the White Mountains, officials at The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department?said Thursday. His friends tried to revive him until the emergency services arrived, but he passed away on the trail.?

The department said the cause of death has not yet been determined, but cautioned hikers to stay well hydrated while outdoors.

The heat wave has flummoxed meteorologists, because it has moved backward across America, something that rarely happens.

Normally U.S. weather systems move west to east. The western Atlantic high pressure system behind the hot dry weather started moving east to west last week and by Tuesday was centered over lower Michigan, said Jon Gottschalck, the operations chief at the National Weather Service's prediction branch.

"It's definitely unusual and going the wrong way," Gottschalck said Thursday. "This is pretty rare."

The weather service issued heat advisories and warnings Thursday for parts of 23 states. More than 141 million people live in those areas.

In New York, Gov. Andrew Cuomo urged people to cut back their electricity usage to take pressure off the state's power grid and help prevent outages or brownouts, NBC New York reported.

New York's power grid operator said they expected a record set in 2006 would be broken with a peak in electricity usage.

Cop muffs 'fluffed and buffed' protest

A Massachusetts State Police sergeant was relieved of duty Thursday after he gave graphic photos documenting the surrender of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev to Boston Magazine.? And the release of the photos could have an impact on the case.

Sgt. Sean Murphy, a tactical photographer for the state police, documented the capture of a bloodied Tsarnaev as he emerged from a boat parked in the backyard of a home in Watertown, Mass., on April 19--four days after the deadly bombings, which killed three and injured more than 260.

Murphy released 14 photos he took during the manhunt to Boston Magazine after being angered by the cover image of Tsarnaev on Rolling Stone magazine, which some have said depicts the accused bomber in a softer light. The photo, which was taken from one of Tsarnaev?s social media accounts, has also been published in the New York Times and other media outlets.

Murphy told the magazine his photos, which show Tsnarnaev bloodied and with the laser of a sniper rifle projected on his forehead, depict ?the real Boston bomber. Not someone fluffed and buffed for the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.?

David Procopio, a spokesman for the state police, confirmed to Yahoo News that the photos Murphy released were taken while he was on duty, and their release had been ?unauthorized by the department.?

?He is relieved of duty for one day and will be subject to an internal investigation,? Procopio said, adding that the police will also schedule a hearing soon to determine his future status with the department.

But Procopio declined to say whether the photos were considered evidence ahead of Tsarnaev?s trial. Last week, the accused bomber pleaded not guilty to 30 charges related to the twin bombings, which detonated near the race?s finish line on April 15.

Defense attorneys have hinted they will challenge incriminating statements that Tsarnaev made to law enforcement officials after his arrest , in which he allegedly admitted to FBI agents that he and his older brother, Tamerlan, were behind the bombings. (Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed hours before his younger brother?s capture, when Dzhokhar Tsnarnaev ran over him with a car while fleeting police.)

In May, Tsarnaev?s attorneys requested and were granted the right to begin photographing the accused bomber while he is in federal custody?as part of what some believe will be an argument to prove he was not in the right health or mental state to answer questions from authorities after his arrest. It?s an argument that could be further bolstered by the state police images of a bloodied Tsarnaev.

?The pictures do raise questions about what condition he was in,? Robert Sheketoff, a prominent Boston defense attorney who is not involved in the case, told Yahoo News. But he added, ?The reality is these photos would have been eventually handed over to the defense. It?s not like they could have kept them hidden.?

But Allison Burroughs, a Boston attorney and former federal prosecutor, suggested the photos would have a bigger impact on jury selection and could possibly help the defense if it argues to move Tsarnaev's trial out of Boston.

?The more things that potential jurors see that might cause them to form an opinion before jury selection or feel prejudiced against the defendant, the harder it is to pick a jury,? Burroughs said. ?But the publicity around that Rolling Stone cover alone has already had that impact. It?s hard to say that the trooper releasing a few additional photos is giving him any more notoriety than he already had.?
