Boise's Association for India Development holds vigil for gang rape victim

The local organization that raises money and advocates for the welfare of people living in India, holds a vigil Saturday to remember the victim of a gang rape and murder that took place in Delhi, India in December.

The vigil is at 5:30 p.m. at the Columbia Village Apartments Club house, 2500 E. Cedar Ln., Boise. The public is welcome to attend.

The local group issued this statement: "By now you must have heard about the gang rape incident which happened on December 16, 2012 in Delhi. This dastardly act has shocked the people all over the world and one only hopes brings a sea change on how women have been treated in our society and routinely devalued. To show our solidarity to the family of the victim and against violence on women everywhere we are holding a candle light vigil. Please note the date, time, and place below and express your support by attending this event."

The young woman who was raped was a student. She died from her injuries some two weeks after the attack. Several men have been charged in the attack. It has inspired protests and demonstrations in India and countries around the world.
